Mint Error or Outside Damage?

Here is a 1942-D nickel that appear to be struck with a planchet flaw, the reason I think it is a planchet flaw instead of damage is that the letter and part of the 1 along with the dot that are struck in the recessed area are in relief which would not be the case if it was damaged outside the mint. Any of you error experts have an opinion on this piece??

Thanks, RR

    Agreed - lamination error.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    A really cool lamination error.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Its actually a scan done on my HP 7400c, I done one high res scan (2400x2400) and just cropped and or reduced the picture down to manageable size (started about 11mb). I just ran across an old album of mostly proof coins (in old 2x2's) that I put together in the early 80's and this coin was in with them so I don't even remember where or when I found it. I also found a couple of toned Jefferson nickels with 2 having the bright blue violet toning like the one RUSS recently had graded, its kinda of nice when you forget about some old coins and get the pleasure of rediscovering them (almost like Christmas in Sept.).
  • Hard to believe someone didn't pull it out of circulation earlier...with all that wear it had to have passed through thousands of hands.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
  • Lamination. I too have, by chance, a 1942d five cent lamination error. It is on the reverse side below Monticello. The surface area is roughly about the same as on your scan. I also have a 1982 cud error cent. The cud is on the obverse. It starts above Liberty and runs up to IN Go on the motto. Pretty good sized cud. I was wondering if anyone out there has a cent manufactured with the same die set?
Know where I can pick up a genuine 1804 Bust Dollar in the $300 to $350 range?
  • What evidence indicates this is a lamination error?

If it's a lamination, rolled-in, or struck-in piece of metal that has since fallen out, then why are portions of the letters and numeral 1 still fully formed and present? They should either all be missing or have a consistent fuzzy appearance if all affected by the same piece of missing metal.

If the missing piece was irregularly shaped, then why isn't there a distinct edge at the partial letters/numeral?

There also aren't any striations in the affected area.

This looks more like a post-Mint damaged coin, caused by being struck/smushed against some irregular object.

  • Are you all saying it a planchet that laminated before being struck? I didn't think of that in my first response. That seems possible.

Lamination error as mentioned by others.
More typical of the war nickels but not unusual for CN types.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.
