2003 RED BOOK Errors?

Got my copy yesterday and so far I see two things that need to be corrected.
#1....The Red Book reports the mintage of the 2000 Silver Proof Set as 856,400. The last mintage figures I remember seeing in both Numismatic News and Coin World placed sales in the 968,000 range.
Something is way off there and you would think the "BIBLE" of coin collecting wouldn't print anything they could back up. They also give the mintage for the 2000 silver dime, quarters and halves as 856,400, but list the proof dime and half with mintages of 2,968,900 while the quarter mintage for each clad quarter is only 937,600!
Seems there are a lot fewer clad 2000 quarters than we ever imagined!
Also look at the mintage for the 1994 WORLD CUP half dollar!!!!!!!!
DON'T PANIC!
This is the second year they have given the mintage figures for the 1996 Olympic Soccer as being exactly the same mintage as the WORLD CUP 1994 half dollar!
Anyone willing to bet the farm on 1994 World Cup halves?
I would write a letter asking for a correction, but the last time I wrote them about anything I got back a nasty letter!
I'll find more, but those two "errors" could be used as "Gospel" from the "Bible" by the TV coin dealers and once again, the uninformed get ripped off.
I WISH THE RED BOOK WOULD BE MORE CAREFUL!

  • Not a good year for the red book. There are some other errors that were noted in an earlier thread. image

I'm not sure how many "collectors" consider the RedBook the "bible" of numismatics. BTW, my version of the 56th ed uses the 856,400 figure for all 2000 "Silver" proof coinage.

Surely, you have noticed that the mint hasn't been totally forthcoming with mintage figures since the SQ program began; I believe I recently read that they have been publishing the "sales" numbers as the mintage numbers - it's why Numismatic News so frequently updates its figures (Mint disclosure/non-disclosure)

Now the various page missing page and incorrect page numbering errors are inexcusable to me, but, as far as current figures in an annually published publication; I wouldn't rely solely on it.

Some values are listed at many multiples of retail and others
are listed for a small fraction of wholesale. If you're gonna
try to live by this bible then you better be real good!
