Does this Ike on Teletrade look proof to anyone else.

What do you guys think, the price struck me as odd, so I had to look...sure enough the coin looks proof, slightly cameo devices is what I am looking at...I don't know for sure, i don't deal in ms ikes that much, but I do deal in Proof ikes, and this looks like a satiny proof to me...oh, well...opinions.

You'd be surprised what some coins around this date can bring in top grades.

So THAT'S what a near perfect 72-S Ike looks like. Neat coin and certainly condition rare!
I would love to own that Ike.

But it's an NGC modern and we all know that MS69 coin is probably only about a PCGS MS66. image

Maybe one day TT will be able to upgrade their B&W scanner and get one with 16 colors. image

the luster looks like mint state. most likely a very, very early strike.

I own two of these in PCGS MS68 and this one shown is heads and shoulders above mine.
    Looks like a REAL MS69!

  • This is a silver Ike. It is much easier to grade ms67 or 68 in silver than clad. The silver also doesnt have the premium that the same year in clad has. It is a very well struck coin, and possibly dipped. The variation in the luster doesnt look quite like a normal mint set coin. I am suprised it is at 2100.00. That is a lot for a silver Ike.

It has the look of an SMS coin.

    1972-S 40% silver mintage 2,193,056
    1972-D clad mintage 92,548,511
    1972-P clad mintage 75,890,000

  • The 1972-S is the easiest of all mint-state Ikes in high grade, and they can sometimes be found with semi-prooflike surfaces, and sometimes hints of cameo as well.

This looks like a nice early strike MS coin, and a beauty. But alas, not a "real" MS69 unless you give it a one-grade bump for eye appeal. Get your DjVu plug-in and go on a tick hunt. image

P.S. Placid, mintages are for the most part irrelevant to high-grade Ike prices... a 1972-P is dirt common in typical grade, but the toughest of any date in high grade. Find one of those in MS69 and name your price. image

But the graders don't use high powered magnification. I agree it doesn't look like an MS69 due to the hit under the eye, but you never know what the graders will give a coin like this.

I'd be willing to pay $50 for it.

I've seen this coin even more proof-like, with better surfaces. Alas, the other
had a couple small ticks, but had a shot at MS-68.

  • Placid, for whatever reason the ms silver Ikes are much easier to come by in ms 67. A complete set of ms 67 clad ikes is almost impossible and certainly out of my price range. Silver Ikes in ms 67 is attainable. I think it has something to do with how soft the silver is versus the clads.
