SBA Souvenir Sets

Did the mint offer 1999 Susan B. Anthony souvenir sets or did they offer only Mint Sets in 1999?
I have 79,80,81 souvenir sets in the green envelopes. But have not seen any 99. Can someone please comment on this?

Thanks

  • I'm not 100% on this ,but I don't remember anything except the mint sets and proof.

  • The only one I know about is the 1999 SBA Uncirculated Coin Set with just the P and D mint SBAs. I have some extras if interested. Dave

It's extremely doubtful. I've never heard of any. The mint announced in
1998 that they were discontinuing the production of souvenir sets due
to interference with other coining issues, notably the introduction of the
states quarters. The SBA souvenir sets had already been out of produc-
tion for 18 years by this time.

  • The mint did sell the equivalent of the souvenir sets for 1999. They only made P & D coins and can be found easily on Ebay for about $7. I have a couple extra at that price if your interested. They are very nice coins much nicer then what were found in the mint bags.

  • For clarification, the 1999 uncirculated SBAs were not included in the normal mint sets. The 1999-P SBA proofs were not included in normal proof sets either. And another bit of trivia, the 1979-S SBA wasn't included in the normal mint sets.

For 1999 uncirculated SBAs, they made a special set containing the two coins, each in their own plastic cello with their own little copper-plated mint token. Here's what the envelope looked like, I don't have a photo of the inside handy:

The 1979-1981 Souvenir Sets came with a variety of packaging. Here's the nicest looking:

Here is a plain green version, which comes in a variety of different shades of green and slightly different printing:

And here's a special Christmas (apparently) version with a Poinsettia motif:

I'm not sure which year(s) the green and holiday versions were released.

I had a customer a while back putting together a set of all the variations he could find... quite a number of them, almost as many variations as PCGS slab types. image
  • The 1999 proof and uncirculated SBA's were struck late in the year, too late for inclusion in the mint and proof sets. That's why they were issued in separate packaging. image
  • Forum Members,
Thanks for your response. The reason I ask. I found an ad on EBAY that list a 1999 SBA souvenir set. I emailed the seller to ask that I didn't think the mint sold any 1999 souvenir sets(PDS), only SBA mints sets( P & D) an a single (S) proof coin. He told me I didn't know what I was talking about and said I should do some research on the matter. Well I came to the best research site I know. You have answered my question... He's the one that needs to do some research.
His opening bid is for(3 sets) $20.00+$4.95 s/h/i for a SBA Mint set that I still can buy from the US Mint. But he is cheaper than the mint for a set of (3). What can I say, some EBAY sellers will try anything to trick the unknowing. By the way his picture is of a mint shipping box. When I ask him to email me a picture of the 1999 souvenir set, he said there's one on the auction page... right a picture of the mint shipping box..
Again Thank You for your help

Supercoin; I've seen a lot of odd-ball packaging on lots of mint
products, but the "Christmas packaging" is a new one for me.

The 1999 SBA Proof was struck in Phila and thus is mintmarked "P"

  • DirtroadRider, you're right they're still available, I'm surprised to see: US Mint.

So in addition the factual errors, they are actually cheaper from the mint than that auction. A set of 3 from the mint would be 3 x $5.95 + $3.95 s/h = $21.80 (instead of $24.75).

Photo of the guts of the set are on the mint's site:

There's a folded glossy insert that comes with them too (not pictured), and (last I knew) an order card for a 1999 Yellowstone commem. Which apparently sold a little better than the SBAs. image
