Does PCGS re-holder at shows?

dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,731 ✭✭✭✭✭
Will PCGS do a re-holder at a show, or only accept them for a later time? I just picked up a Liberty Nickel in the older little holder, and want it in one of the holders so it fits in the box with the rest of the set. I can have my dealer do this at Long Beach if they will do it at the show, else I will wait until it is more worthwhile to do. (hate to pay shipping on one coin from PCGS, they are worse than the worst ebay sellers)

Yes, at last Long Beach show, I gave a 1905 Indian to reholder. Dropped it off at 11:00 a.m. and got it back the next day. It was only $5.00 and they threw in a new box for it.

Hmmm .. and thought I was getting a good will gesture in the form of a box when I sent in 15 submissions -- with three body bags ... $5 does not cover the box with postage, let alone a reholder. Where do I sign up?

Thanks for the info, no box needed. I have access to dozens from my local dealer.

You will have no problem...is it worth trying for an upgrade? K

The last one I had in the older holder went from MS63 to MS64. Since my set is a MS64 set, not sure if I want it to. I will have my dealer look it over and give me his thoughts. If he does not think it will go down, I may spend the $13.50 to try.

  • Dbl Die,
Are you saying that you sent in a coin for a reholder and it came back with a higher grade? I have an amazing PR65 Franklin in an original holder (not sonic-sealed) that could go at least 67 if not 68. It is a common date, so the price of paying for an upgrade is not worth the trouble. But if I can get it bumped for $5, that would be a good deal.

On the same note, what is the freakin' deal with PCGS requiring split invoices for different grading categories? I am a low volume patron here - maybe a couple coins a month. To have these split (1 under $300, 1 modern, 1 gold, etc), I get killed on separate shipping charges of $15 each. What a ripoff. Is it that hard to believe that they cannot track the group of orders and wait until the last one is ready for shipping? One of my favorite auction places, WineBid.com, will hold all shipments at their facility until you say to ship them. That way you can get a volume discount. I say give me a choice!

    dbldie,

In the Liberty nickel series, do you think the 1912-S is an underrated date in 64 and above? I've never really seen one I liked.

Actually, PCGS charges $10 for same-day reholdering. They'll charge you $5 if you want them to mail the coin back to you after the show, but of course you'll have to pay shipping on top of that. If you pick it up at the show they will usually throw in a free box, but if they mail it to you.. unless you submitted it with some other coins.. they'll just send it back in a padded envelope. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee they will have your coin reholdered by the time you're ready to leave the show, unless you're planning on attending the next day. I submitted one for same-day reholdering when the bourse opened at 10am. They still didn't have it back by 7pm and they had to mail it to me. If I recall, they tried to get me to pay for the shipping, but a quick phone call straightened them out.

I have not seen a 1912-S "I" liked, but I have not seen that many. I know many are not very well struck (same for the 1912-D). Haven't got to that part of my buying ( I work on a small budget ) so I am not sure if they are underrated. If so, I hope they stay that way until I get mine.

Blade, no it was cracked out. It would have been $5 to reholder, or $13.50 to have graded. It was worth the $8.50 to get the 64. I would never send a coin in a holder trying for an upgrade. This coin I really do not want upgraded (maybe if I ever sell but not now) since my set is a matched set in MS64. I have an Eliasberg MS65 1883 No Cent, but this coin will not be part of the set.

$10 is worth it if I can get it back when my dealer returns instead of waiting a month. (It took PCGS 6 weeks to do a designation review on one coin)
