Three amazing Rainbow Toned Lincolns graded, need some help

Check out these gorgeous coins, just came back from PCGS in holders...got killed on some other stuff about 15 bb, but I am at least happy about these. As nice as the picture is, the coins still are about 10 times as breathtaking live.

1941 Rainbow Cents

I need your opinion on the the top two pictures, they are the same coin, but can't figure out which one I like better. Please let me know.

Not sure I can help ... PCGS does not consider me a good judge of copper. Sent in a MS-65+ 1909 VDB with wonderous blue, purple, green toning and -- you guessed it -- it was bagged for "questionable color" -- my hindquarters! Went to a major show the next weekend and found plenty of raw and slabbed Lincolns with the same toning as your coins, yet somehow, I won a bag! image

    you made me laugh, thanks.

    Brian.
  • Truthfully I don't see enough of a difference to matter which one you use.

In all due respect, they look artificial. I have over 400 PCGS toned coins in my collection.
Admittidly, only a dozen or so, are toned Lincs. I could be wrong, it looks like heat application.
    What does everyone else think?

  • Been collecting Lincolns for 20+ years now. Purple, yes due to chem/cleaning but those colors throw up a big red flag.

I have some certified by PCGS that look like the bottom one(and that one is the best) in fact I sold one to TOM B that looked simulair to your bottom coin. The bottom one of yous has less hits and no carbon, there is a gash at the temple on the first one.Send them in and good luck.Al

It looks like real end roll toning to me. I would use the picture that has part of the slab showing. Here's one I just got graded by NGC 42 proof image mike

this one is obviously natural and gorgeous. Even blue with underlying luster is never a problem.
Blotchy orange and sporatic red with spots looks suspect to me. What do you think?

    Top left.

    Seated Placid:

You're right, the top left , looks the most suspect.

  • IMO, AT.
  • I like the one on the top left....mmcoin, would you mind if I blew it up and hung it next to my poster of 2 colliding stars? Those colors would fit right in image

  • It's hard to tell about color from an image. However, I have never seen that gorgeous color GREEN duplicated artificially. Any "purple" on a copper coin gets me nervous (heat or retoned dip?). Still, the PCGS slab gives the nod for me. I think the coins are gorgeous (even with that hickey on the obverse center). image

  • The picture on the left shows more definition on the higher surfaces and right side, but hides details near the bottom. The picture on the right makes it look like a weak strike in the areas that are generally weak. I'd use the left picture.

    perfectstrike
  • I agree with perfectstrike, definately the left.
Small cents - ain't they beautiful!
  • Thanks for all the input. I plucked these from rolls myself. Submitted about a half a roll to pcgs and these are the absolute best, but the others have nice tone themself. The bottom left one in the pic does have some green to it sort of undertone brilliance if you will that does not show up for some reason, probably the blue and purple are so intense that it covers over it. Matteproof, you are right in all the at example of any coins I have seen, thousands perhaps, I have never seen green quite duplicate as well as it is on these three examples. the other 20 coins or so, have mostly purple and blue, some with green mixed in, but they all have the same look to them.

Not sure where to price them, or if I even want to sell them, I tried to use anaconda's pricing plan and kind of came up with prices for them, but who knows.

  • I wish these were DD's for you. Personally I like my Lincolns RED. But it nice to see toned examples every now and then. Enjoy them.
