what do you think about this aucion

I sent a e-mail asking, "If I order one or more of these can I choose PCGS only?
Thanks."
Response.
"NO"

They have over 200 hits and not one single bid.

What am I missing?

  • I avoid these type of auctions. They're just scam artists trying to make more money then what they can normally get out of it.

  • Also, if the bill is passed allowing rare graded coins into IRA's, then we will see a huge jump overnight as people scramble to obtain these jewels and place them in their accounts!!!

    What's the deal with this?

Thats because they are all NGC slabs that will not bring MS65 money. He throws PCGS's name in the mix so people will pay more and hope they get a PCGS graded coin. But of course they will not.

They are all NGC graded common dates that normally sell for $30.00-$40.00.

He has four negatives in 6 month's aloneimageThink not.Al
  • I'd e-mailed him the same question on a previous auction , and got the same answer. He wouldn't guarantee I'd receive ANY PCGS coins on a multiple purchase , let alone all PCGS.

I sent a second e-mail and he said, "5+, with the best deal on 10 or more...(10 diff dates/mints) As far as what service you get, we just take what we have at the time, a real mixture."

    Thanks to all whom responded.

fcloud if you are interested in common date Morgans do some research. Sign up at teletrade and you can search their archives for prices of recently sold coins. One of the bits of advice you got here is that these are $30-$40 coins, which they are not. The other point was made that most of them were NGC coins and worth less. Never let the facts get in the way of your opinion, here are four the dates in this guys auction, you can do the reasearch yourself on the other dates that sold on teletrade.

    83-0 sold on 5/27 PCGS $75
    83-0 sold on 7/10 PCGS $80
    83-0 sold on 8/16 NGC $65
    83-0 sold on 9/12 PCGS $65

    84-0 sold on 6/26 NGC $75
    84-0 sold on 7/15 NGC $70
    84-0 sold on 7/28 PCGS $75
    84-0 sold on 7/31 NGC $70

    85-0 sold on 8/20 NGC $70
    85-0 sold on 8/26 PCGS $80
    85-0 sold on 8/28 PCGS $70
    85-0 sold on 9/09 PCGS $80

    82-S sold on 8/14 NGC $75
    82-S sold on 8/15 PCGS $85
    82-S sold on 8/28 PCGS $80
    82-S sold on 9/04 PCGS $80

The average selling price for these coins was almost $75 which has been the price for the last couple of years. If anyone wants to sell me any of these dates for $30 to $40 please PM me or any of the other ones in this guys auction. fcloud do some research and don't take everything your hear on this forum as gospel. There certainly is not a consensus, not enough people commented on your post. I hope this helps you out in your future coin endeavors.

  • Maybe someone should ask if you could request an NGC coin. I bet the response would be different then.

I agree with IrishMike that the NGC coins aren't worth that much less, but I do feel they are just a touch easier to come by. What this guy is doing is simple, but I do feel sneaky. He gets NGC and PCGS both in the title, but maybe only has alot of one type (even if it were PCGS that he had). It would be interesting if someone bought some of these, to see if they ever get PCGSs! Actually, I wouldn't buy this kind of thing anyways, because you know the seller can pick out the worst looking or most borderline MS64s one to send out!

JJacks, you and I are in agreement on this auction I wouldn't go near it, but we also have a responsibility not only to the new members but to everyone on here not to throw out information that is blatantly not true, and I think you and I would both agree on that too.

Thanks, Mike and Jack, for the information.

I appreciate the way you two discussed the issue rationally.

  • Irish and fcloud,

First of all, Irish I do agree with you completely here, but I have to wonder if Bill just made a typo or accidently priced the 64s.

Fcloud, you should always be suspicous when something looks wrong or "funny". It probably is funny. You can learn alot by looking at completed ebay auctions, and just hanging around these boards for a while. You need to learn what coins that you are interested in really sell for. Once at an auction when I got into coins, I made the mistake of buying a slabbed MS65 Franklin Half because the book on it was way above the current price it had been bid up to. Turns out, I got it for a decent price, but nowhere near the bargain I had at first thought. The price guides are simply way too high on MS65 Franklins that are toned in an ugly manner. I should have realized that if no-one in the room of coin collectors wanted to pay near the book price, it probably wasn't worth that.

JJacks, I am sure Bill thought they were 64's, the point is no one took the time to inform fcloud that those prices were incorrect and I would have forgiven Bill for his error if he hadn't also made another one of his cutting unfounded comments about the relationship between NGC and PCGC prices for coins. Common date Morgans sell for almost the identical prices in both slabs, do the research, don't take my word for it, I don't throw those comments out lightly. I have reiterated time and again in here my preference for PCGS slab coins in certain series and why. But we owe it to new people not to continue to let our emotional dislike for another grading service bring us to post thoughts that are erroneous. I can understand loyalty to a grading service when you have an investment in their coins in a registry, but that is no excuse for spreading misinformation. I remember when I first started collecting and I took carte blanche as the gospel what the long time or older collectors told me. Some of it was true and some of it was wishful thinking.
