My submission results...including my first vintage 10!

Wow! My invoice just popped...very quick turnaround on the set registry special. The results were pretty much as expected with two supprises. I sent in 55 1968 Topps cards and a 1989 UD Griffey that I thought was a sure 10. The Griffey was cracked out of a BGS 9 holder with good subgrades. The first thing I did when I got the grades was scan the list for the 10 I expected. I saw a ten and it wasn't Griffey. In fact, the Griffey card previously graded BGS 9 came back as trimmed. How could this be? Oh well. I got my first vintage ten...1968 Topps #371 Tony Oliva All Star!!! I also got a nine on a Brock All Star. Overall I got 1-10, 4-9's, 43-8's and 6-7's. I thought there would be a few more 9's, but I and so pumped about the 10 that it doesn't even matter!!!

Uh oh. . .I have an order that PSA received on 9/4 - a day after yours. As if I wasn't checking the status on it every 5 minutes as it is. . .

As for your trimmed Griffey, I'm not particularly surprised. While I've cracked several BGS cards and sent to PSA with no problems, BGS has gotten a reputation in the hobby as being prone to missing trimmed/altered cards. However, I think I've only sent two cards that weren't commons.

You're lucky that the trimmed card was Griffey and not a superstar card. Congrats on the 1968 PSA 10.

Congrats on the nice 1968 Invoice--especially the GEMMY!! I couldn't wait to drop mine off in Ft. Wash., so I took 'em to the Post Office this morning. Wondering if you felt anything special about the Oliva before you sent it in? Coincedentally, I too had an 89 UD Griffey Jr. RC returned as trimmed. Mine was bought raw in Maine as a set of 3 identical--the other 2 came back as 8. Anyways, any premonition on the 10?

What day are you going to be at Ft. Washington? I am planning on flying up for the show for a day.

Actually, when I sent the cards in I thought that the two All Star cards had an outside shot at a 10. But it was a total suprise to actually get one. I think the card looked so good that I was over critical on it and figured it would be a 9. The cards came out of a set that I bought a while back. It was advertised as EX/MT. When I e-mailed the guy about it he said that there where some pack fresh mint cards in there. When I got the set, most of the first 100 or so cards were horrible VG/Ex or worse. I felt sick. Then before I knew it I was looking at NM/MT+ cards in the same set. It was a strange set. There was a run of absolutley horrible cards, then absolutely beautiful cards. I paid $1,200 for the set and with the last two submissions I probably pulled 100 - 8's, 10 - 9's and 1 - 10. I have another 50 borderline 7's and 8's that I probably won't submit and a box of over 300 commons that average VG/EX from the same set. Overall I guess I am happy. The only Hall of Famer to grade besides the Brock was Yaz 8. So no big dollar cards. A few low pop. 9's though and the 10 of course.

    E and acowa :

Early Sat AM coffee??? E, I cannot do lunch as I have a b-day party to go to later on.

    I heard PSA is NOT doing onsites .... bummer. I got a T206 Mathewson that I think is a 4, maybe a 5.

  • Congratulations Krems on the 10!! I have a big stack of cards going out this week for grading. 63's, 68's, 75's and 79's.
All of my 68's are amazing and I'm hoping for a slew of 9's....but, do I dare dream of a 10!!
Maybe some of your magic will still be floating around in the air in the grading room, and a little bit will spill onto my 68's.

  • A vintage ten!!!! I'm happy for you. I know the feeling because it's happened twice to me. A 1960 nu card ans a 1964 topps. It makes your day!!! Congratulations!!!!!!
I collect the 1960 and 1961 Nu Card issues. I also enjoy the 1959 Fleer Three Stooges.

I've only been fortunate enough to garner one PSA10 from my submissions - 72T Giants RC. While I am no longer doing the 72 set, I'm happy to say it has a good home.

As it turns out, PSA popped my order today - #867309

Don't even ask me what happened on the 68T Gamers in there image

  • Way to go, 10.

    Now, what are you going to do with it? My one & only 10 was a 1969 Expos RC. I sold that sucker about as fast as a muggin' in Watts. To me, 10's are way overrated. I'll take 3-4 well-centered, glossy 9's anyday over a 10. {Wouldn't anyone?}
  • OK, since the SMR does not even list a PSA 10 catagory for the 68 set
What is this great card worth???

Congrats on the PSA 10 -- A great addition.

BKAH -- Without looking at the Pop Report (which is absolutely crucial to the 1968 issue), I would guesstimate $400 - $600
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • Mike,

That song popped in my mind....."867-5309". I thought to myself..."I've seen those numbers before somewhere". Nice job on those '68 PSA 9's.
  • Wow, that is a great looking invoice and congrats on the 10!!!

Where did the raw stuff come from? How many cards did you have to search through to find 50ish PSA 8 and better.

    I am green with envy.

the pop report shows it is 1 of only 2 10's...

  • Cardkid,

My friend actually ended up with that number (867-5309) as his home number about a year ago. He had to give it up after 2 weeks because of all of the prank calls. (people calling and singing the number, ect...) It's amazing how many people still remember that song.

Good question Toppsgun...I'm not sure what I am going to do with it. For the most part I feel the same as you that 10's are overrated, but this one might be different since it is my first vintage 10. I already have a 9 of that card so I may list it on ebay with a high reserve like $500. If it sells great, if not I would be more than happy to keep it in my set and then I'll sell the 9.

Matt...most of the cards were from a set and a few from a couple 100 card lots I got off teletrade advertised as NMT.
  • acowaacowa Posts: 945 ✭✭
If you decide that you want to sell it...there's no reason to do the EBAY thing...I would contact the top three people on the registry instead of paying EBAY to get the same money.
