another submission ... complete prestige set...

well i thought i would send in a complete prestige set. 1987s. the constitution and the nickel got pr68dcams, everything else pr69dcams. invoice no. 3046197. overall pretty good. I let pcgs crack them out of the original plastic. I think i bought this set from "numish" on ebay for 18.00.

  • Nice results. You're smart to buy from TheNumish. He always has beautiful coins and evidently offers some great Prestige Sets! Way to go.

I thought PCGS would NOT crack them out of original mint packaging. If they do I have a PILE of submissions for them!

They will crack them is you will have ALL the coins in the set graded. They will not crack sets that are sealed by the mint.
  • Hey Greg this was a mint sealed prestige set. Do you mean they wont crack out a mint set?

I had three prestige sets all ready to send in, 19 coins total. Then I checked completed auction prices on eBay, instead of using the price guides. Paid $100 for the sets, would have cost me $220 for grading and shipping charges, and the most I could possible get for the graded coins was about $500. Ebay fees would be about $50. Plus my receipts for the sets are several years old, so the IRS will ream me on the full $500 (Social Security alone is $75, or 15%.)

So, doing the math, $500-$100-$220-$50-$75=$55 (and income tax will be more than that.) Decided not to pay for the privilege of working this month and tore up the form. Oh well.
  • Oh, you want to make money doing this? If you do the math your only hope is to draw an ace high straight flush and hit a pr 70 sometime. I havnt sold any coins yet. I am still trying to figure out how to submit coins without getting back trash. So far submitting in the original mint plastic has given the best results. My next shot will be ms kennedys, raw. We shall see......

From what I've read here, PCGS doesn't give PR70's these days, so based my math on everything coming back 69DCAM, and still can't break even on them. I don't mind working for PCGS the IRS and eBay, just doesn't make sense to pay to work for them. Makes more sense not to work and collect food stamps instead. Now I know what it's like living in a communist country.
  • Actually the communist creed is "everybody works equally, everybody eats equally". In this country a few people work and everybody eats off of those few. Which is better?

or just tax everyone 100% in the name of "security" and have the federal government take over all aspects of our lives. Same deal, different Orwellian double-speak.

You would fit in wonderfully over on the Open forum.

And, actually, it’s the Republicans who have been pushing for the federalization of everything lately, in the name of “security.” Also, starting during the Clinton administration, the minimum taxable income was reduced from 15K to the current 5K per annum. No one can live on 5K a year, but they’ll still fine you $1,000 for not filing your return on time.

As a side note, my parents went to Beijing last year, and their impression was “it’s just like the USA is.”

But I'll save it for the open forum, or Braddick will sic the board Nazis on me.

The prestiege proof sets aren't really sealed. All you have to do is pop out the back panel and the clear plastic holder will fall out. This will open with ease. They are not "sealed" like the proof sets of the 1970's.

I've submitted several intact proof sets from the 70's, all in their original packaging, without a problem. PCGS is more than happy to slab them, and it's a lot easier than breaking open the sets, putting the coins in flips, etc. But, since all the coins in the sets are being slabbed, then they all have to be worthwhile, otherwise it doesn't make sense dollarwise.

You're not a John Birch Society member by any chance, are you? image

  • Wait a minute pat, i didnt say i was in favor of communism. I just get really steamed when i pass the housing projects in chattanooga where 30,000 people live for free and i work 7 days a week to pay 12,000.00 per year in property tax to keep them up. That in my opinion is worse than communism! I wouldnt have what i have in Russia, but we would all be in the same boat. The democrats decided long ago that everybody eats whether they want to work or not. 1/3 of the population of Tennessee is on some form of state aid. Another third are too old or too young to work, the last third is being taxed into poverty.( ps I wouldnt live anywhere else.)

    Can't argue with that!
(John Birch Society members are about as far to the right as possible.)

    Braddick,

They are also staunch supporters of law enforcement, since it happens to be one of the things the Founding Fathers actually thought government should be doing.

sorry to disappoint you braddick, but I don't even know who Birch is and could really care less.

My point was Republicans who claim to be for decentralized government have used the events of 9-11 to seize more power away from individuals and states. The Democrats who claim to represent the poor have lowered the minimum taxable income and are actually taxing the poor more than ever. The board moderators who claim to provide a place for people to openly discuss numismatic related topics do, in fact, censor opinions not to their liking. According to my dictionary, that's the definition of hypocrisy.

They are actually fairly good about allowing these things. The one exception is the registry where they get all hissy and over protective.
