quick question about beckett

ive been looking through my new copy of beckett, and for some reason prices for 99 rookies are WACK!

couch has done nothing, but is still priced the same as brooks, culpepper, james, williams, and mcnabb. Akili Smith is a listed player, and books more that kearse, bailer, johnson, amd sometimes boston. He has also done NOTHING. where does beckett come up with their prices? do they pull them straight out of their azz's? beckett is an active part in ruining the hobby. to me he is having much the same affect as selig, fehr, and the stuck-up players are to the mlb. Their prices run and ruin the hobby. Their prices keep getting lower and lower, you pay $80 for a box and are lucky to get $80 in bv. I love how rookie parrallel's #'d/50 are only worth 1.5-2x as much as the rookie #'d/1000. I love how you pull a jersey #'d/35 that books $30, or a rookie jersey auto that books $60.

  • I agree, some of their prices are just stupid. An sp authentic ryan leaf still books at $60. Who the hell would spend even $5 on that card

  • lol, exactly!
  • Yea they are way off on alot of stuff. Best guide is always what the card sells for at auction. There are some cards that I would die to pay full book for, just don't know what the guys at Beckett are thinking on some stuff.

They better adjust Quincy Carter stuff soon, even if his stuff is rare, doesn't deserve those price tags....

  • Beckett is only a guide. It by no means puts a specific value on any card they list.

The best way to see the value of something is to monitor it on Ebay.
Looking for former University of Arizona NBA RC's in PSA or BGS 9's/GEM MINT grades. Die hard University of Arizona and Bay Area Sports fan.
  • it puts a specific value on them!! where is the first place people look when they get a new card, or if they wanna know if they are getting a good deal, BECKETT!!
  • another reason why beckett is ruining the hobby, back in the early 90's people paid full book for stuff, mid 90's about 75% for stuff late 90's 50% and now ppl want to pay 20-25%. Now thats the people's problems somewhat, but with beckett contstantly lowering prices, they have their fair share in it!
  • i would also have to ask where they gather info about player pricing, because when they start to group players into categories like "semistar" and "unlisted star" they really dont take into consideration the player's recent performance or hobby status. so i support your gripe in this regard

as far as general prices go, i also partially blame beckett, but when you look at what you can pull nowadays, some nice cards with reasonably low prices isnt to be unexpected

take for example 97-98 NBA skybox rubies - they are #'d to 50, and multiplier is 200x. but they were the best insert you could pull (unless you landed a superstar autographics)

2001-02 NBA spectrums #'d to 25 are 50x (correct me if i'm wrong, my beckett is a few months old). doesnt make sense on the surface, but there are a lot nicer cards you can pull from a pack of this product. and project it out over a case, and the spectrums may almost be a consolation pull, compared to a jersey, auto or auto jersey RC

as for people paying low prices - that is what happens when there is a flood of new products every season. its almost impossible to pay full price for cards if you want to continue collecting a player. 6 years ago there wasnt really a problem, and so people would be willing to pay more. also, ebay and the internet in general has made the hobby more competitive and has helped the consumer shop around. thus they can bargain hunt and drive prices down. generally, more choice => less demand => lower prices.

add to this the flood of GU on the market, and there is some justification in some prices. if beckett wanted to be more accurate, we would see GU booking for $2 or $3 in some cases, as that is all the low end tends to sell for! but ofcourse if they did this, people would want a bargain still & wouldnt wanna pay full BV of $2 anymore!!! thus, beckett will more than likely overstate a card's cash value.

as UofAWildcatFan said - its just a GUIDE. you can easily assign a value to a card yourself, if you feel thats what the card is worth to you. i'm often happy to trade in the other guy's favour if it means i get rid of something i dont need and get back something i need. it doesnt bother me what the total BV is, i dont need to get a 100% even trade, just so long as i think we're both getting good value.
