Sacagawea Mules

You know, I was thinking about those mule coins, and other examples of just plain quarters struck on Sac planchets, and my question is, if this happened with SBAs back in the late 70s and early 80s, would anyone have noticed? I'm sure it must have happened like it has in recent years, but now they are so much easier to pick out. Has anyone ever seen a quarter struck on an SBA?

I listed, under dbldie55's Mule Thread, an address where these may be purchased for $11.00 each.

  • As far as I know there are no known quarters struck on SBA planchets. If there were that would definitely have to be an example of a fabricated error since it would requir that both the obverse and reverse quarter dies be installed in a dollar press. On the other hand there are SBA's struck on quarter planchets. They will almost pass unnoticed by most people unless they realize that it is way too light.

Upon closer inspection of the press and the coins that it had been striking, the employee discovered that he/she had inadvertently installed the obverse die for the Washington quarter. By this time, several thousand Sacagawea dollar-Washington quarter mules had been produced.

I guess it would be possible for sba "mules" thou no one has found one that has been reported.
  • Conder, I will defer to your expertise on coin production procedures, but couldn't some SBA blanks have been mistakenly mixed with the quarter blanks, similar to the 1943/44 copper/zinc cents?
  • Yes it is possible that SBA planchets could get mixed in with the quarter planchets but sine they are larger in diameter they would not fit down the feeder tubes, would probably not be picked up by the quarter feed fingers, and would not fit into the coining chamber and so would have to be broadstruck if they did manage to get into the press (And it would be much more likely to be an off-center strike if it got into the press rather than an on-center broadstrike. ) If it did manage to somehow get into the press and struck it would be larger than the finished quarters and very unlikely to get through the riddler process. If it di get through the riddler the only way to get out would be in one of the bulk bins because if it was counted out into a bag it would jam the counter due to its size.
