Advice on learning to grade.

I recently purchased a photograde book. However, it only goes to AU. Does anyone know of any other resources that helps with grading MS coins?

Thanks in advance!

  • Go to the ANA site and look at the books they have listed there - you'll have a ton of reading to chose form! image

The Official ANA Grading Standards for US Coins is a great help... it goes from AG-MS70 on all coins (really modern ones start around XF/AU; really old may go lower than AG)...

I find it is a little more helpful than PhotoGrade and it has more descriptions of the wear, although PhotoGrade has bigger pictures... it is $16ish and you can get it anywhere (I got it at Borders)

Your Local Coin Shop if its a good dealer and all Coin Shows so that you may view and distinguished the differences between the grades. Viewing coins is the best way but the books help out also. Nothing like real life IMO.

Look at lots and lots and lots and lots of already graded coins in your series. When you're done with that, look at lots more. I bought all the books and thought that would be enough. It isn't. It's a good start, but nothing beats viewing the actual coins already graded.

    try the PCGS grading guide.
  • "PCGS guide to grading and counterfeit detection" is one of my favorite books. Looking at multiple coins in different grades will help tremendously also. ANA also has a book on grading standards. Then there's several books on each series of coins that will help you in specific coin series of Numismatics.

Books are fine buy you need to look at coins over and over and over and over and over as much as you can. Go to an auction lot viewing, go to a show, go to a coin shop. Look, look, look and keep on looking...study. Learn about particular series and what to expect.

Then when you are done with that, look some more. image
