ANOTHER Merc thread - I love this coin!

Sorry to bore all of the non-Merc collectors, but I just received 3 new dimes for my set yesterday: 1918-P in 65FB, 1918-S in 65, and a 1929-S in 65FB. The '18-s and '29-S are OK coins, but the '18-P is a beauty! Check it out below.

As usual, there's a lot of red on the basic Merc chart. Did these guys win the lotto or something? It looks like Tim and Dennis are battling it out for 3rd place; I'm a distant 5th (but I'm still tryingimage).

Let's see what the rest of you are adding to your sets. I mean all sets, not just Mercs.

  • I still haven't figured out to whom you guys are referring to when you keep posting over and over about sorry to bore you with Mercs or here's another Merc thread, everyone else just ignore, could you guys clue me in here? I'm not a Merc registry collector but really enjoy seeing the Merc collectors enthusiasm about posting and updating their sets along with the pictures of some really awesome dimes. I say keep it up and post like you guys used to, if anything, other series collectors can go on about their business if they don't like it, I like the Merc pics and threads, keep them coming. Very nice 18-P BTW
  • Nice additions, Jim. All three look good to me, especially the '18 & '18S! image

I just added a '40 67FB to my set, and hope to have a '45D 67FB soon. image

Hey, if i can't find/afford some earlier dates, might as well fill in the '40s w/67FBs! imageimageimage

Glad you like the coins. Thanks for the encouragement, Andy.

You're right, Don. Sometimes it's just as hard to find coins in the grades you want, as it is to be able to afford to buy them. I began the registry set in January, and thought that I'd be able to find/afford all but perhaps 5-10 coins by the end of the year. As it's worked out, I've bought many in higher grades than I'd originally planned, which has slowed the rate of acquisition, but I certainly don't regret it. I keep reading in the Greysheet that Mercs are "quiet", and that's fine with me. Those 67's are neat coins, and many don't cost an arm and a leg. They're sometimes difficult to buy at auction without getting caught up in the last minute bidding frenzy, and paying more than you should. You've got most of the dates from the '40's already, but some low pop/high dollar coins remain. Good luck in your search.

Hey Guys Nice, Nice additions !!! I have gave up on the Mercs and have started seeking Type Coins. Here is a picture of the 3 I found yesterday that traded Mercs bought. All AU coins but pretty cool IMO. The Picture might be Huge if so I'll adjust it if so

Aw Crap. I also did buy a Upgrade Dime yesterday. Its a 28P in 65FB that was on Ebay but was also on the Northeastern Coin Web Site. The Tone looks real Funky by thier scan but I believe it will be just fine. Took a chance that it would still be available as I sold my old one at the Coin show and Rushed home to buy the New One. For once one of these did not Blow Up in my Face. Glad that did not happen again as the face is Crater Marked enough from Blow Ups. image

PS: Jim are you Tired of the 18P Yet ?? If so just Send it My way. I saw a nice one yesterday also but the Funds and the Slab were short and wrong in that order. image
  • Nice Mercs, Jim.

Very cool looking type coins, Ken. I especially like the 3CN. She is my second love. image

    Ken,

Those are some nice additions. The 3CN appears to be a very high-end AU, and the '77-S quarter is a nice solid coin. The Standing Liberty quarter is in my Top 3 favorite designs. I even liked them as a kid when I could still find them in circulation. I think you get a lot more "bang for your buck" with type coins than anything else. I've got a 1792-1964 type set started, and everything so far has been MS or proof, but I'm going to have to be content with circ examples of some of the earlier types. There are a lot of scarce and expensive varieties of the Bust and Seated coins where a problem-free VF-AU will have to do. Below I have pics of a few candidates for slabbing, when I can work up the ambition to get a package ready to send to PCGS.

I can't believe you're giving up on Mercs, but I know it's hard to justify the cost of a '16-D in mint state when you think of all the other coins you could get for the same amount of $$. I'm not sure I'll ever get that one myself.

    Jim:

Not giving up the Mercs completely but getting rid of extras that have been bought and turning them into Type stuff. I have a real appreciation for a early Type coin even if it is a lower grade. They are just plain good looking when original. That Half Cent you have pictured is a Great Example of what I am talking about. Stuff like that is very collectable to myself.

The 3CN is a AU58. What I really liked about the coin was the very apparent Die Clash on both sides. I seem to remember from back when I also had some other Type stuff that this is fairly common with the series.

I'm in the same boat as you. image Need to get a submission together for PCGS on some Mercs and a CC Seated Dime that Jon was kind enough to sell to me. Lazy has been the word for myself lately. Better fire the rear end up and get some things done.

    Al,

Those 4 new ones are great additions. You didn't mention the grades, but I assume they're all at least 64's, which seems to be your minimum grade. They should put you real close to me, or possibly a bit ahead, depending on the weighting. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of them.

Very nice coins guys. Jim your new Mercs are great and Ken I really like the SLQ.

I,ve started a Walker set, but haven't entered it yet. I'm going for 64's that look like 65's.

I also am tempted to start the 1792-64 type set. Lot of beautiful coins in that set!

    Very, very nice!

    That 18-P is a beauty!

How can one complain about those lovely type coins?

I am one of those strange merc dime collectors. I went for the key dates in FB mint state then stopped.

Picking one up here and there when in the mood.

My type set of mercs is only the 16-D in FB 42/1-P(not FB) and 45-P in FB. I did things backwards.

My favorite date is the 45-P, of course.
