I think I'm gonna puke...

I know this has been brought up before but I'm sitting here flipping the channels and I stopped on HSN while they're selling coins. As if it's not bad enough that they're selling St Gaudens double eagles for $700 that are borderline MS60, but I have to watch these 2 shmoes rubbing their fingers all over them?! I wonder how many coins they ruin in a month over there. Blahhhhh... Gotta change the channel before I hurl. image

sell your puke as a toning kit!

Those TV shopping networks are probably one of the biggest detriments to the hobby.
The Pepto is on stand by.
  • Although I will never buy anything from them, they are funny to watch some times-when they're not rubbing coins.

  • I saw them the other day selling the "Binion silver hoard". They were charging about $250-$300 a pound for circulated Binion silver, then they would throw in an NGC slabbed Binion Morgan with each pound. If you looked closely, the Morgans weren't graded, just certified as "Binions", and the ones I saw were common date and heavily circulated. Doh!!! image

And if that isn't bad enough. I saw a show on the mint and collecting either on PBS or TLC (sorry not sure which one). The showed a grading service handling raw coins with their bare hands! I'm not sure which service (it was not PCGS). But, how do all the services handle coins? I hope this was the acception and not the rule.

fcloud, PCGS graders bare-hand the coins too.

That could explain the errant finger mark I've seen on some certified coins. And would that cause some of the toning around the edges. I know the mint uses cotton gloves when they handle the proofs out of the presses. Why would a grading service not wear gloves?image

I think they just manhandle the same coins over and over. In a year or so, they'll all be ready for the Braddick Collection.image
