Your opinion of this $20 Liberty?

1903 $20 MS64

I won this coin in a Heritage auction, and I was wondering how close it is to an MS65. It has relatively few marks on it, although the luster is somewhat subdued. There are also a couple of small copper spots on the reverse. Would you call this a high end 64 or a typical one?

Thanks,

Dan

nice coin! but I don't think it has a chance of up-grading to 65.image mike

  • I think the problem with the coin is that there appear to be a few (albeit small) marks right on the prime focal point - Ms. Liberty's cheek. I am not an expert in this series by a long shot, but that is certainly distracting enough that I assume that is why it got a 64. I am buying alot of 64/65 Peace $'s lately, and I find that I like coins where the cheek area is super clean. Even if there are marks elsewhere, the graders immediately check the prime focal points on coins, and may overlook marks elsewhere.

I bet if this coin was worth 7.5 million dollars ,
it would get an upgrade just like the 1933 St Gaudens coin. Bear

  • It's a nice 64, but not upgrade material in my opinion.
  • The reverse is much cleaner, except what appears to be some copper spotting. On the other hand the obverse is 64 at best. I would say overall the coin is a fair 64 and has no shot at 65. But as the other guys have said you paid a good price so overall a good find.

Agreed that it is not a shot 65 and the next question will be can it and will it cross to PCGS as a 64? It has a decent chance.

I would save these pics and if it crosses to PCGS as a 64 then you can tout that both grading services gave it a 64. Gives you more to crow about.

Unless you need it for a PCGS registry set, it really isn't worth the grading fees to try to cross this coin.

Nice luster, good strike and relatively clean fields but I agree with JJacks that there are too many marks on the cheek to get it into a 65 holder. That said it's still a very nice 64.
