A pox on all you tone lovers! Look at what you made me do!

Ok - so maybe not a really bad pox - more like an annoying rash - but since we all started talking about ($*&# toned coins, I've been looking at them and now I'm starting to buy them! How did I do - your comments will be most welcome - Opinions - is it real or AT, and what grade do you think.

Thanks

Frank

PS - I really do like the coin!

Frank -very nice looking coin but I really can't make a guess to the grade from those pictures. I think it is most likely AT. My philosophy on AT is if I like the look I don't care if it's AT. mike

I don't think I have ever seen such intense russet/blue colors since I have stopped taking LSD.

  • I have to wonder if at least the back is AT. It looks very similar to the heat treated samples that someone earlier posted as an example of Obvious AT. Honestly though, I have no idea, as I usually collect white coins!image

Always buying music cards of artists I like! PSA or raw! Esp want PSA 10s 1991 Musicards Marx, Elton, Bryan Adams, etc. And 92/93 Country Gold AJ, Clint Black, Tim McGraw PSA 10s

JJacks- I can honestly tell you, via the scan, this one is real and not heat treated.
Logic would also dictate it would be improbable to just heat treat one side with the opposite having real toning.

I don't blame you for being cautious- but this one is A-OK in my book.

How you did depends on the grade and price you paid, not just the color, which by the way looks genuine to me. It's hard to tell grades on scans, and as time goes by I like this guessing game less and less. But, the piece appears to be about MS64.
  • The dealer had it graded MS65 and I talked him down to MS64, consumating the deal for $50. I figured it was a shot in the dark but I really liked the way the coin looked so I went for it - I think I'll have it graded and see how it comes out - at very least if I do get it slabbed it'll hopefully stop the toning process where it is.

It looks real to me. the reverse has same toning that you see from being in an album or from being in a envolope. i have seen this type tonig in many different holders.

Braddick, capped bust toning is exactly what came to my mind too. It LOOKS very nice, but, I am still trying to envision the toning process. The reverse looks like it came out of an album while the obverse looks like the rims were somehow protected. That puzzles me.

  • Gilbert:

The lighting may have caused that - the coin shows a gold hue under bluish toning which gets deeper toward the middle of the obverse of the coin.

Frank, I don't know much about toning, but I love the look of the piece. Ted Turner wasn't crazy, the classics do look better in color.image

FC - If its a pox, then you will have to contact Sadaam H., as he appeares to be in charge of such
communicable diseases for the time being at least. As for myself,
I would settle for your second option of a mild rash.I got a half bottle
of calamine lotion somewhere, but it always makes my fur cake up a bit. Bearimage

The coin is superb. Congradulations. It is NOT AT!!!!

    Brian.
  • The coin doesn't have any white spots like in AT created by sulfer compunds. The toning does not end around the lettering, stars and devices. If the coin doesn't smell like a rotten egg than I'd agree it doesn't look AT to me either. A naturally toned coin with that look is a steal for $50.00!

    Nice work Frank!
