These were the pictures of this gold coin as shown by the seller of a 1901 PCGS MS-62 $10 gold piece.

Reverse

Now take a look at the pictures I just took of this coin. What do you really think?

  • While no expert, I think you take better pictures than the seller! Your pics look similiar to other $10 Libertys graded 62. $20 gold seems even more baggy at 62.
  • Im not a gold expert by any stretch - but it sure doesn't look like many of the MS62's I've seen - looks like you got a pretty good deal!

  • Sorry, I'm certainly no gold expert but I looked at the thread anyway since I thought there would be nice pictures. You didn't disappoint me. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

    The coin looks AU.

EDIT: Just over the ear. Isn't that wear???
  • I wouldn't think so - It appears that's where metal didn't flow all the way through.

FC57: Ok, that's a possibility but it's also possible that where the metal didn't go is NOT necessarily where the rub shows up first on this coin. Many coins are like this, such as Buffalo nickels. The problem here is that I don't know Liberty $10 attributes. I've never really been interested in them.

I would say this is a typical ms62. It looks to have slight wear on the high points to me also and the luster seems to be lacking. This coin does appear to be much nicer from the smaller pictures. True this coin has surface marks comparable to a higher graded coin but with luster and slight wear problems I think it's topped out at MS62. This is just my opinion from the scan and I do think it is a very nice coin. image mike
  • I think this is a very nice 62, but it's hard to say if it is undergraded from your scans. It is certainly very nice for the grade though.

I have looked at this coin in person and in my honest opinion it appears to be an AU-58 to an MS-62. I see some stacking rub along the hair underneath LIBERTY. The coin also seems to have a hairlined apprearance when scoping it.

The coin is also suffering from a "corrosion"spot by the first star as well.

There is enough small chatter on the face and surfaces that makes this coin look overgraded at least on the obverse. The reverse is a completely different story. Nice reverse and full MS-63.

A real Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde of a coin.

It is a shame since at first glance and with the naked eye the coin has nice eye appeal.

The seller's scan definitely boosts the eye appeal of the coin to a minimum 63 and perhaps a 64. I don't think it was doctored, just favorable. I bought an MS63 $5 Liberty from Heritage not long ago and the scans were smoking - 63 PQ++ and an easy shot at 64. When I got the coin, the luster was definitely less than the scan portrayed and a couple tic marks appeared as well. Still a nice 63, but no where near the look of the scans.

Edited to fix typo on grade.
