Possibly getting Dad's collection...

My Dad and I will be discussing his collection sometime this week and although I have a feeling he will turn over his collection to me free of charge :-) I would feel like a stooley if I didn't offer him some cash for these coins, Hopefully you guys can help me out in determining what a good value would be... even though I don't have specifics.

2- Morgan Dollars. I know one is 1879 and do not believe it has a Mint Mark.
2- Rolls of Silver Dimes (Roosevelt- assorted dates)
2- Rolls of Silver Quarters (Washington- assorted dates)
4- Rolls of Half Dollars (Assorted Walking Liberty, Ben's and I believe 1964 JFK's)
100-200 (Approx) Wheat Pennies
1- Roll of Peace Dollars
3- NYC Subway tokens including one blank planchet :-)

I would have to say most every single coin has been circulated and none of them are from Proof sets, this is just an estimation on the coins, how would you guys figure out price?

-Thanks!
-David

  • My guestimate...

If all common and circ...mostly bullion value (about $3.5 per $1.00 face value) especially for the dimes, quarters and non-Walker halves and 2 cents each for the wheaties. Common circ Walkers usually bring a slight premium over bullion and Silver dollars almost always bring a premium over bullion and are probably worth $6 each so if common and circ.

This is minimum value and I would offer my Dad more. image

  • If you've hinted around that you would like his collection then offer something for it. If it is his idea and he brought it up then no don't diminish his gift by offering money. It is not about money.

  • It appears to me to be mostly a bullion stash and is worth the silver content.

Are you a collector or do you just see something of value you'd like to own??
What do you plan to do with the "collection"? Will you keep it or sell it??

I think these would be what I would want to know if I were dad, not "how much will you pay me" If he wants to sell it he can do that anywhere.

I've never thought about collecting subway tokens but if they're the old type about the size of a cime with a "Y" shaped portion of metal stamped out at the center they might bring a few bucks. I was a kid back in the 50's ~ 60's when I think those were issued. It would be a treat to own one of those (haven't seen one in 30 years or more).

  • coynclecter,
Being that I am more of a Modern collector (1998->2002 but do have a small assortment of older coins) to me it would be a great honor to add the coins to my collection and see what I could do about picking up any dates or mint marks that are missing from the collection...or if I have any doubles, trade with somene to acquire the missing dates/MM. As they are circulated coins, I don't think any of the coins will carry much value and it's probably not worth slabbing them.

At this point, I would not turn around and sell them but if I came across a coin that was worth like $25,000 image and suddenly found myself with Gold Fever, I would talk to my Dad about it first.

    pmh1nic,
My Dad worked for the LIRR for over 40 years and before he retired had more seniority than anyone else image He does have the original Y token's, not sure what condition it is in AU50... image and I believe the blank planchet came from the time they were making those tokens.

I'm hoping to get the chance to see him tomorrow but my weekend is pretty busy and during the week I have destruction/construction going on in my house. I'll let you guys know.

The tokens are of only nominal value. The blank one is probably quite scarce
but such items have so small a collector base that you may never find a buyer.
Wheaties are so expensive to ship that you almost have to pay less than a
    cent to break even.
