ICG Morgan- AT or natual toning????

Slabbed by ICG, currently on EBAY what do you think about the toning, a little suspicious to me because colors are are so vivid and unusual, what do you think, just want to get some insight form other board members on this type toning. Price range is bumping around a 100.00 now, MS64 Thanks

    Mr. Cartledge,

Are you partially questioning the authenticity of the toning because of the ICG brand? That is, would you still question the toning if the slab were PCGS (or even NGC)? I ask this because you seem to be an aficionado of vividly toned coins, and so I assume that you must have seen many Morgans like this in PCGS slabs.

There's a couple of things you ought to be aware of:

    1. The vast majority of vividly toned Morgans are human creations. I'm not saying that the coins have a superficial layer of A/T. Rather, I'm saying that someone manipulated a set of circumstances such that the coins will truly acquire these vivid colors over time.

    2. No set of graders can easily distinguish A/T from natural toning if the job is done right. ICG graders are a competent bunch, and are no more or less human than PCGS graders in this regard. You may think that they grade Morgans looser than PCGS (i.e., ICG MS65 is really PCGS MS64), but that's a matter of grading standards and not a matter of competence in discerning doctored coins.

  • No sir, not questioning the ICG Slab, Just these colors are very unusual and vivid and would still be a little suspicious to me with my limited knowledge of the natual color sprectrum process even if it were holdered in PCGS or NGC, I am still learning and have problems with determining if unusually vivid colors like this are natural, I would probably bid on this coin in the price range it is at now, with the execption of an acugrade slab, because I like the colors and this type pattern toning. I guess I have moments of doubt when colors are as vivid and pretty as these are in determining to buy or not to buy and just dont want to get burned.(school of hardknocks). I hope to learn from the opinions of our board members and excellent collectors like yourself. Thanks

    1) All services are easier on Morgans when it comes to AT.

    2) ICG will slab AT coins with some ease.

    3) I'd guess the coin looks nothing like the photo. This image was manipulated. Not even a good manipulation. It looks like a bondman22 (Mr. Adobe Photoshop) creation.

I agree with EVP. ICG isn't any "easier" on AT coins that either NGC or PCGS. Their graders are just as compentant as any other service as far as I can tell. Theire grading standards for MS coins are somewhat more leniant however.

You are absolutely correct. That's a bondman22 "special". Be extremely careful. Many of his pics (if not most) are wildly enhanced. It's a crap shoot trying to figure out which ones are true. I've seen some of his coins after they were purchased (not by me) and a couple of them weren't even recognizable as the same coin in the pic. I'm not trying to badmouth anyone, just offering my personal experience. Bottom line is a big "BUYER BEWARE"

The toning may be genuine but the scan certainly is not.
  • I have to agree with gemtone65, Bondman is the king of enhanced photos on toned morgans. I have found a number of really nice toned ICG morgans but only about 20% are accurately graded.
