    I say MS64

    Brian.
  • I'm a newbie and just practicing my grading skills, so don't take my comments for anything other than opinion.....
Anyway, I would say MS64....why? Because of the ding on the reverse feathers and the spot/ding below the beak on the reverse.....on the obverse, I see 2 marks below the arm and 1 mark to the right of the "I". Also, 1 ding by the 2nd ray from the L. Also, a number of marks on the left knee as well....and....the strike looks a bit weak as well......just a guess as I am still learning to grade...

I would never pay more than AU money for this coin (look at the stacking rub on Liberty's neck and breast and possibly some rubbing at the top of her leg). But the pictures can deceive.

This coin might get slabbed MS-62 at best as luster is a little subdued on obverse..

Reverse looks better but has some digs in eagle's feathers.

I agree with Oreville, low MS maybe. For this date the coin would have to really shine,as it were.
Need to see good luster...and few(er) contact marks...
    Overall a nice coin,nevertheless.
  • Well, the newbie's hit it. It is graded as ms64 by pcgs. GOOD JOB!

Marty - With this grading triumph under your belt,
when will you be starting as a PCGS Grader?
    It seems that
they could do a lot worse. You got two sharp eyes and a brain.
A couple of nice things to have in a grader. Bear

  • Bear,
I'm gunna take your advice.....I'm currently filling out the ACG grader application form....
HHMMM.....name, address, phone, SS#....not much info required.....oh, wait, here we go.....here's the qualifying question on the form:
What is the current value of a 2002 circulated Jefferson Nickel? Hmmmm...well 5 cents of course!!! Feeewwww....I guess I'm in image (Unless of course that nickel has a large die crack making it worth $90,000) LOL

  • I saw the slab grade but I don't know if it is the picture, lighting, or what but it sure looks like it has wear right down the middle of the obverse (where the prominent flat spot/stripe is seen on well circulated Walkers).

Nice coin though and very pretty.

    Dan,
Thanks for sharing that. I've got that coin's twin. It's a 46-D in an NGC MS64 holder. Has similar luster and, the real kicker, a ding in the reverse feathers in the exact same postion. I don't have a scanner and am still working on figuring out the digital camera, so no pic handy.

I am new to Collectors Universe, but not a newbie. I have been an advanced and sophisticated
numismatist since 1982. Many dealers come to me at shows to prescreen their PCGS/NGC subs.
I have taken the ANA grading course twice and get together with buddies on the weekends to
have grading parties with our new acquisitions. I love your 1945 Walker in the old PCGS holder.
Those old PCGS holders are great. Their grading was a little more consistent then. Thanks for
letting me grade your Walker a 64.

Boy are you people cynical. You have to remember that ACG is the most consistant of the 3rd
party grading companies. Almost every coin comes out either MS or PR 69 or 70. Even PCGS and NGC
cant match that consistancy, now can they? Bearimage

    Tip to new graders:

Please consider the strike when evaluating a coin's overall grade. Many new collectors tend
to overfocus on contact marks. Did you know that many professional graders look at strike and luster
    first, and then contact marks.

    Brian.
  • I wanted to grade this without looking at the other messages... but I went and looked!

On the obverse there appears to be slight wear on the breasts. On the reverse it appears as though there is some wear on the tips of the wings (or it could be the camera/flash) otherwise I think it is a crisp coin.

If I had to go by the first picture, I would say anywhere from an AU58 to a low MS but after seeing the graded slab, it's definately an MS64... the insert pointed that out image

  • Brian, welcome aboard. I am not exactly sure what a sophisticated numismatist is. image Makes me think of the new pics in the "Bluemoon coin" auctions. Really, no offenceimage I am sure in your 20+ years of collecting you have encountered many desirable coins. Hopefully after 20 years for me I will have held all the coins I want to.

I like the old slabs too. I could have spent a few more minutes trying to get the coin to line up, but why?!?

This next coin is my son's latest addition. I am not a collector of peace dollars, however I really like this one. Glad it's in the house. BTW thanks for letting me show it! Well anywho, what do you guys think the grade of this little gem is???

It looks like a nice 65. I love Peace dollars.

    Brian
  • Well Dan,
I thought I'd go out on a limb and attempt this once again, with some intelligent insight from Brian's other post....anyway, without too much detail and using Brian's insight on strike and luster, I would say MS62. Why?
lack of luster and weak strike....if I understand things correctly, the lack of luster and weak strike will significantly lower the MS grade.....I look forward to any insight and the correct grade....thanks Dan...

    Edited to say:
Are you guys saying that the "seemingly" lack of luster (based on what I see in the pics) is irrelevant based on the lack of marks, etc??? Someone educate me here please....thanks

Wish the picture was bigger. Looks like a very nice peace dollar I will guess ms66.
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 11,953 ✭✭✭✭✭
I like the Peace Dollar more than the walker!

Surface wise it is very clean and strike looks decent. I can't get a handle on the luster based on your photo lighting. Looks like a MS-64 possibly 65 if the luster is all there.

What kind of lighting and photography are you using?

No, the luster is indeed subdued on that coin. It is also undergraded by 1 grade.

The cartwheel is non existent. The larger pics do indeed help in seeing the coin.

What kind of lighting are you using and what kind of dpi and camera?

MartyF and I was dicussing the concerns about the luster.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!, is all I can say. A 62!!!!, WOW!!!! , again, talk about conservative. I wish
I saw more of these at shows, I could buy them for $15-20 , pay $15 to cross them over and
have $75 dollar coins come out the other end. Does anyone else agree with me that this coin
should have been a 65? Or is it too late and I should just go to bed.?

    Brian.
  • Ore,
Full cartwheel. Just tossin them on the scanner. I am expecting a digital camera next week. Bout time. I have so many toned coins, I just cannot capture.

  • LOL Brian,
I took your other post about luster and strike into account (based on the pics) AND crossed it with the ANA grading guide and made a "guess" based on those points about the grade....maybe I should play the lottery or something....anyway, thanks for all the education I'm getting around here....I really do appreciate it....

The obverse of the coin is great for a peace dollar. The reverse is what I wonder about the blob of whatever in the upper letters. The dark area is that shadow or is the coin really that dark?
If I didn't know better I would say it was given 62 as a market grade.

  • orevilleoreville Posts: 11,953 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Ahh,,,a scanner...scanners don't pick up cartwheels well.

    I don't see a 65 here. I thought 64.

I will show you a coin next..........

    Question:
Since the 1922,23, and 1925 Peace dollars come in such great quality. Do you think PCGS/NGC
are more strict with them as far as grading? Does it seem like the quality dates in certain series,
receive more scrutiny. ie. 1943D dimes, 1938D nickels, etc.? or is it the other way around???
I think that grading services as a whole, are more liberal with key dates and those dates that come
    in poor quality!!

MartyF; Sure but the luster is what really separates the two coins. The frosty skin on the coin.
