It's got to be the flips

A bunch of my orders just posted, and the grades are horrid!!image The only thing I can think of is that I switched flips from the ones I bought from PCGS to the soft sanflips I bought from JP's Corner Supply. What I thought would be PR69DCAMs cane out 68s, 67s and 66s. What a waste of money. I don't get it, the last order I sent in with the PCGS flips graded one to two points higher that all the other orders in the past 3 weeks. I'm waiting for them to show up next week to see if they have haze on them. Any ideas???, thoughts???image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Marty,

I absolutely, positively feel your pain. I flushed a bunch of money in fees and lost value due to haze in the past. The upside is, the problem is solved. I just completed three test submissions, all of which came back with ZERO haze, and most of them made precisely the grade and designations I had in my notes.

I also tested various combinations of flips/poly bags here over a period of a month, and the coins that were packaged the same way as these last three submissions also had no problems at all. The solution?

ET Kointainer SAFLIPS. As recommended by Supercoin. They work, period.

  • Russ,

Can you post a link to where I can buy a few of those?

I get them from Stanton. There are quite a few other places that sell them also.

  • Pcgs also sell them but their shipping cost is really high.

I looked for them on Stanton's Site a while back and could not find them. Any hints where on the site to look?

  • Due to a problem I had with a submission, I actually tested the Saflip's. I put what was going to be my next submission into the saflips and packaged as I normally would. (bubble wrapped in a 12"x8"x8" box)
This box as left in my car on occasions and exposed to different weather conditions such as high heat (90+), high humidity (90+), low heat (70) and low humidity (50%) It was out in the car during rain and it was brought into the house on some occasions. (To simulate different conditions)

The coins did not have any issues after I took them out of the box. No hazing, No Fingerprints, no scratches and no strands of hair :-) developed on the coins.

  • dakra i had the opposite experience, my coins hazed in saflips but not the cheap plastic flips. bottom line is i dont know why coins haze. I think I am the only one so far that has had a bad experience with saflips, so take my experience as just one example. Percentage wise saflips are at 95 on the board member scale.

    Idhair,

On Stanton's site, they're here. Toward the bottom. For submissions, you want the 2.5x2.5 size.

    baseball,

They just come in a white cardboard box the wouldn't be suitable for storage. But, you can buy boxes for that purpose, there are a wide variety on the market. Stanton's carries them for both 2x2 and 2.5x2.5 flips.

  • The ones that I listed probably come in plastic packaging. I am sure you can purchase a box that would fit them either from this dealer or another one.

Thanks. I connect a little slow. I didn't give the page time to load.

    Marty,

Sorry Bud. That always ruins my mood. Russ is right though. I was lucky that Spooly put me on Stanton early on. They're nice folks, and provide fast shipping. Spend some money with him, he deserves it. image

About two years back I ask PCGS and several coin supply dealers about the safety of proofs in poly bags and vinal flips. PCGS never answered me but now I notice they recomend mylar flips with no mention of poly bags. Don't think they know for sure. The dealers I ask said no problem. Keep in mind they sell them. What else could they say. MS coins are not a problem but on proofs I have to go with mylar.
I really feel the problem is a combination of several factors. Holder, temp, and humidity. I might be full of it but I always felt that the humidity in the room I package the coins in is locked into the package. Add in the amount of time sitting and who knows.

I can't really tell which material is used in different flips I come across, but I can say that I can recognize mylar, and that is the only material that has not given me any problems. I have had many coins ruined by PVC, and at other times I'd bought some coins and they were in some kind of vinyl flips, and before I could switch them to mylar, I noticed a haze (sort of like a ring where the coin had been in contact with the material) had developed on the vinyl. I'm not sure if the coins were damaged or not (I don't have a microscope), but the haze/transfer of coin material? very evident on the vinyl gives me tremendous cause for concern. This kind of hazing can happen within a couple weeks, and was evident on all flips, regardless of whether the coin was silver or copper, uncirculated or circulated.

Never never never use anything except mylar if you don't want to destroy your coins.

I've also heard of a product that I'd like to try, which I feel may be the BEST possible alternative, and that is "Intercept Shield".
