Yes, I find this coin very interesting. First of all, it's in very nice condition, and if the inscription is from the war, and can be verified, it's a wonderful piece of history that should go over very well with history buffs, especially Civil War buffs. Maybe you could do some research yourself and collect other info about that captain, and the coin, and the circumstances surrounding the inscription. Very fascinating.

Too bad the guy wasn't a Rebel!

If it is real it's neat. I have my doubts as to when the it was done due to the brightness of the ingraved area so I would not bid too much of a premium for it.

Yea, I remember selling it to that guy. I wasn't too happy with the job I did on the inscription, so I sold it to him for $15.00. Carved it last year as a matter of fact. image

Probably done after the war as a memento.

    That's a very cool coin. I hope it's genuine.

I wrote the guy on that webpage that CalGold linked about the coin and provided the auction. here is exactly what he wrote back.

"Francis Luther Guenther graduated from the USMA in 1859 and so would have
been a Bvt 2nd Lt on graduation. He had a long career in the Army and
retired in 1902 with the rank of Brig. Gen. USA.

He received a Brevet promotion to Colonel in March 1865 for Civil War
service, and in 1886 he was a substantive Major in the 2nd Artillery.

All this is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the US Army."

    AHA!!!

you thought you'd sneek in there and bid on that and we'd never see it if the thread disappeared!!

It's a very neat coin but it's starting to approach the "it's not THAT neat" stage. (saying that with my poker face)

    Good Luck!
