  • If he truly did find those with a metal detector that he did extremely well. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but I am a little skeptical. I owned a pretty decent Garrett metal detector for a couple of years and never even found a silver coin let alone a gold one. Sure it could have a lot to do with location etc, but it has made me very skeptical of those that claim fantastic finds. image
  • Krypton.... There is no doubt that gold coins like these are very rare finds, but occasionally they do pop up. I can assure you that this fellow did indeed find them with a detector. If you are interested take a look at the other posts that were made tonight on that forum and you will see some pretty old coins. Of course most are not in all that great condition because they have been in the ground, but they are indeed a thrill to find and they even have a place in ones coin collection.

  • I won't pass judgement, but the likelihood of one person with a metal detector finding 2 D-mint Classic head gold coins in one lifetime is extremely remote, unless he scoured the entire southeast. That being said, if it is true, this man should put up his metal detector and start buying powerball tickets since he is EXTREMELY lucky!

    Hi MikeinTyler,
I think I used to talk with you on the White's forum. I lived in San Antonio, but moved to Mississippi.

Remember the guy who found some large pre-historic tooth on the edge of a lake... not with his detector, buy just saw it while detecting?

  • jtryka,

I believe you're right about those odds. But, to play devil's advocate here.... maybe he found them together?

  • Clark,

You are absolutely correct, and that's why I haven't concluded that this is necessarily a tall tale. As I said, if it's true this guy is very lucky, if it's not true, at least it's a good story! This hobby is repleat with amazing stories like this (didn't the person that had the 1870-S half dime find it in a junk box?), and I am always amazed at what people find. A year or so ago, I heard about some people searching under the main street in Hillsboro, OR when they repaved it, and one guy found a CC-mint half eagle. But D-mint early gold is very scarce, and as a gold collector, I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen a pair of D-mint Classic Head half and quarter eagle together. If it's a true story, I'm amazed, if it's not true, it's still a great story!
