I think I used to talk with you on the White's forum. I lived in San Antonio, but moved to Mississippi.
Remember the guy who found some large pre-historic tooth on the edge of a lake... not with his detector, buy just saw it while detecting?
I believe you're right about those odds. But, to play devil's advocate here.... maybe he found them together?

You are absolutely correct, and that's why I haven't concluded that this is necessarily a tall tale. As I said, if it's true this guy is very lucky, if it's not true, at least it's a good story! This hobby is repleat with amazing stories like this (didn't the person that had the 1870-S half dime find it in a junk box?), and I am always amazed at what people find. A year or so ago, I heard about some people searching under the main street in Hillsboro, OR when they repaved it, and one guy found a CC-mint half eagle. But D-mint early gold is very scarce, and as a gold collector, I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen a pair of D-mint Classic Head half and quarter eagle together. If it's a true story, I'm amazed, if it's not true, it's still a great story!
