I bought this RAW and I think I'm gonna.....

Get it graded!

Look at this Columbian Expo 1893 Commem...

Before you look - it is very toned. Underline VERY.

But under a glass - there is not a single mark on it. I have looked and looked again - it is CLEAN. I cannot find any marks on it. Look how clean the globes are under the ship. Look how fien the detail is.

I buddy of mine said to clean it but I don't think I should. I think I should have it slabbed. Any thoughts?

Here's the pics - if you have a way to get better pics tell me - it's very difficult with a coin this dark:

I would imagine it would be worth a lot more as is in a slab. Particularly if it gets a high grade. The toning isn't great, but it surely isn't hideous either. There are a lot of people out there who like to see this type of toning as evidence of original surfaces.

Plus, if you clean it, it could actually come out worse, or uncover marks you couldn't see before, or both. Leave it and send it to PCGS, that's my opinion anyway.

What I would do is see what the coin is worth in different grades, figure out what it might slab at, and make my decision accordingly. If you think the value of the coin slabbed in your expected grade is $50 or less, would it really be worth the slabbing fee?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

DHeath, I don't see anyone quoting boards in that auction, just stating an "average opinion". Nonetheless, the coin looks like it would be easily bodybagged for harsh cleaning, among other things.

    Don't get used!

I think he's a big liar. He has no plan to submit it, he'll list it on e-bay saying all the gcoin board experts said it's an XXXX (Don't want to give a grade... I might be quoted!).
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Robert and kranky - I am thinking, based on the scope, that it could be as good as a 65 - like I sdaid NO MARKS...at least I can't see any. In that grade it's worth it. Wouldn't you do it? Even as bad as it looks?

    Example

<< <i>This coin could easily grade PCGS MS-62. Most of the forum discussion boards have graded it as a 62+/- on average. I believe it's a little less. >>

If you think it might 65, send it in. Worst that could happen is it comes back a lower grade or gets bodybagged, and it could be instructional to figure out why.

  • I feel the strike is on the weak side. From the scans or pics, I do see some marks... esp. on the reverse (they could be on the 2X2 mylar). My concern is still the strike.

If you feel it is worth it, by all means submit it to one of the acceptable grading companies (NOT ACG) and let us know the results.

itsnotjustme has struck the crux of the matter. its4real has been buying POS coins on ebay, garnering grades from board members, then selling the coins on eBay with those grades as gospel. I don't believe he has any interest in numismatics at all and is out for a quick buck.....and at the newbies expense.

I, for one, am tired of his incessant posts where it is only me, me, me! There is give and take in the world and it has become obvious that this guy is only a taker!! JMHO

I bought this Columbian Expo raw when I was about 8 years old, still have it... and it's still a counterfeit (ya, I know "no one would counterfeit such a cheap coin.") Have a bunch of fake common date Morgans too. All crude cast copies tho.

    Hey guys,

It's not clear to me that its4real is doing anything wrong this time. In fact, has he done anything wrong since last weekend? I'd like to think we're big enough to give everyone second chances...

  • look - my wife finally came clean...

She put extra, extra caffienne (sp?) in my coffee last weekend. I also threw the cat against the wall, dug up the entire front yard (I was trying to find a mole - DIDN'T), and waxed all 4 cars. Then, a neighbor came over and said he wanted me to help him unstop his toilet - I suggested we dig up his sewer line, to make sure his septic tank was gone, and got out 2 shovels. He said forget about it and went home.

All around - it was a strange weekend, I got a lot done, and my wife is happy - but everyone else is mad at me.

forgot to ask....anyone else ever have a bad weekend?

People , have you ever heard of giving a person a second chance. While I could be wrong, I have found
that people can be a lot nicer then we think they are. Lets take a leap of faith here and try it. Pleeeeezzzz.

By the way I sorta like the coin as it is and would not dip or clean it in any way. It could go MS 64/65.

    Tell your buddy.

    Never, ever clean a coin.

All you do is kill any value in which the coin had.

A natural tone is better than a coin that has been dipped or cleaned or polished or wizzed--you get the idea.

You could send it to a consevation company--but this coin probably wouldn't be worth the service.

  • I'm not one to throw stones either, but I find the continuing negative comments on this thread and others just as bad as anything that Its4real has done. I am sure those making the comments will most certainly not agree, I'm not picking sides or trying to flame anyone, I just want to read some informative coin threads without having to sift through the garbage.

It looks XF to me but with being cleaned and retoning I think it's worth about $5. Easy to see wear on the sails( especially the rear most sail it looks flat and shiney), the globes, ocean, eye brow, and in the hair( I know this is the area where strike weakness shows the most on these but this is wear! ). This coin is definitely in a state of lower preservation for this issue and should not be mentioned in the same breath as a MS65! mike

Sorry, but I think the second and third chances have passed. There are not many that get on the wrong side of me, but I just don't find much redemption in posting a coin for sale that looks cleaned and calling it PCGS MS62, then attributing that to members of the board.

    Folks,

If you don't like its4real's posts, then just ignore it. You guys are slamming him under some notion that his posts are disruptive or otherwise wrong. Personally, I think if you continue to feed into this nonsense, then y'all are guilty of the crime too.

This lynch mob mentality is getting a bit tiresome...

Of course, it doesn't help that its4real isn't making much effort to be an obviously constructive member of this message board.
