Token Merc Thread since People do not like Merc Threads.

Hey Merc Folks. Got the new 1919P MS65FB Dime today. Throwing a picture up here for you to see it. I believe Jim requested this as the picture in the Auction basically showed a Toned Slab only. Well anyway its in a picture with another 1919P I own. One is a 65 coin and the other is the 64 coin I had before. All that has to be done is figure out which coin is the New 65. Took all the pictures today with the same light set up and touched No controls on the Camera after starting. Good luck with your Guesses and please tell why you guessed as you did if you wish.

I want to Learn something here. Who better teachers could I have than you folks ?

Enjoy and Thanks.

  • Ken, I think the first one is the 65. It has a better strike.

    Ken,

I always like to read these Merc threads image Now the coin #1 has the nicer strike, than coin #2. I see some small marks on the neck in coin #2, yet this coin is the ms65. Coin #1 has 1 contact mark in each band (mark in the cap not that critical IMO), so I would grade this the ms64. I look forward to finding out for sure.

  • Im going to go with the top being the 65.
  • Number 2 is the 65.

  • I think #1 is the 65. It just looks like a better struck coin to me. Could be the toning on #2 detracts to my eye, but I'll stick with my first impression of #1 being the 65.

So, what do I get for being right? image

    Ken:

I think it is very hard to tell because the toning on coin #2 didn't seem to photograph as well as the toning on coin #1. Because I think the strike on #1 is better (on the reverse, look at the E in ONE, and the ST in STATES; on the obverse, look at the LIBE in LIBERTY), I'll guess that #1 is the 65.

LOOKING FOR 1931-s merc that is nice for the grade and fb
  • the #1 coin is 65....the hair detail on the first coin is much stronger, and the LIBERTY is not mushed out like #2 coin....I will go with #1 being 65.....if it werent for the two small hits on the stalks on the reverse, that would go 66....IMHO...

    Fix The Puter. (Smile)

The Score I believe is 4 to 4 and just about what I thought it would be. Both dimes have some flaws you cannot see but they even out each other IMO.

Interesting and Very Nice Comments. Will tell later after the rest post I hope.

That 20P puts both of these to Utter Shame. Not saying these are Bad but it is Damn Nice. I think I'll Crack it.

I say #1 coin looks cleaner and has a better strike, the motto looks weak on #2 compared to #1.The #2 coin seems to have a little better strike just above the forhead only.Al

    Spooly,
You should try DSL, it helps. I was going to say, be glad they aren't silver dollar collectors. I scrolled back up and realized they look the size of a dollarimage (O'well) ha ha! Nice pictures.

Both coins have a good enough strike to be 65. The first coin has to be the 65. It has way fewer hits if the pics are accurate.

I'd say the one on top is the 65. It's got a better strike on all of the lettering, nice even color, and has more eye appeal, IMO.

    Excellent Folks!

#1 is the New coin and the MS65 coin. It is not as Flashy as the MS64 coin but it does have a far superior strike. The two coins have equal amount of marks with maybe, IMO, the 65 coin having two small ones in a more critical position, her cheek. Eye Appeal, again IMO, goes to the 64 coin and this is not saying the 65 coin is a dog because it is not. I am sure some would like the 65 eye appeal more because it is more white. Eye Appeal is very subjective in the Numismatic world and this is a good example. All in all both coins are nice and either could be 65 or 64. It was the Luck of the Draw that determined which got the Grade this time.

Thanks for the Responses and I hope the Critics were not PO'ed by the Merc Thread. image Hope to find more neat stuff tomorrow at the local Coin Show.

  • Cool Thread Fairlaneman,

    I guessed wrong.

It still doesn't change the fact that there are way too many of you merc guys. You guys are like swarms of bees! It's really kind of intimidating!image
