1998 Kennedy Commemorative Set - what is it worth?

Hi all,

I have noticed that 1998 Kennedy commemorative sets seem to be selling for quite a premium these days. Could someone please enlighten me as to why that might be. I'd also like to hear some opinions on current value (IOW, what would you pay for a set). Is the JFK half responsible for the set premium as compared to the RFK proof alone. Thanks in advance.

It's the special matte finish Kennedy half. They were limited production (if memory serves 50,000 pieces without looking it up) and are highly collected. The pr69 halves sell for 300+ in holders, and are pretty heavily traded, but seem to always be available.

    Special Mint Set

the kennedy has a Matte Finish.
I paid around 300 for mine in a pcgs pf69 holder. I think the RFK half goes for maybe 40 or so in a similar grade.

As you stated the JFK is responsible for the large premium, not the MS RFK commemorative, and only with the matte finish. There were only about 62,000 of these produced; thus, this is now the "key" coin for the Kennedy set. As for price, they go for $300-350 (tulving.com has all you want in MS69 for $350).

This is a spectacularly beautiful example of the Kennedy type. Worth every penny in my estimation.
  • My local shop is selling the sets raw (in original mint packaging) for $260 I think. Maybe I'll trade my Buffalo 2-piece set for one. Or maybe not.
