would anyone grade/slab a chopmarked dollar?

I was wondering if ANACS would net grade if for being (damaged) would they slab it? if not who would?

see the coin below

It's not a hole its a test mark

  • I tried getting a bunch of counterstamped 8 Reales graded once. NGC and PCGS won't touch them due to damage, I believe that's ANACS' position too. These are different than chopmarks of course. However, ICG gradee them with no hassles. It's the only thing I've ever used ICG for. Might want to give them a call and ask, but that's your best chance.
  • I am only passingly familiar with chopmarks but is that 'bullet-hole' in the middle a chopmark?

how is ICG's grading do they net grade and just say VF-25 or do they give it a grade and say AU-50 damaged/chopmarks, also is their grading accurate?

Anacs will net grade it, SEGS will net grade it and soon NGC will net grade it. PCGS will not touch it with a 10 foot pole!

    Chopmarked dollars:
    ANACS: Net grade
    PCI: Red Label
SEGS: Net out the grade too.

I'd go with SEGS as they will list on the holder the chopmark they don't use offensive red line labels or "NET" grades.

  • I was more just wondering if it was damage or a chopmark.

It's known as a test mark. Test marks are holes or cuts to see if the coin is plated.
i now know this because of "shirohniichan" the almighty trade dollar expertimage

agree that it is a test mark. common on trade dollars, and early large coins, such as bust halves and dollars.

I have had ANACS slab a counterstamped Central America 4 Escudo (the counterstamp was from Costa Rica). They listed the coin without a net grade and not as Central America, but Costa Rica.image. I had to call them and talk to the grader, but they had me send it back (at no charge) and they slabbed it.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Why do you want it slabbed?

When my BU chopmark set is complete, I intend to have them slabbed to protect the condition of the coins. That seems about the only reason I can think of!
