PSA Graded Hockey in PSA 8 or PSA 9

I'm looking for PSA graded hockey in the 50's in PSA 8 or PSA 9. I never seem to see any posts for hockey. Are there any hockey collectors out there? The 1951 Parkhurst set and the 1954 Topps Set are my two favorite like most hockey collectors.
I collect Vintage Hockey cards in PSA 8 or better.

GoldenFlash-You will find plenty of collectors of vintage hockey in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Otherwise, it does seem to run a distant fourth in collecting popularity. There are still quite a few people bidding good dollars for 1950's cards is PSA 7 or better condition on ebay. Good luck in your pursuit of those two sets. I am working on a more modest 51-52 set as it was basically the first vintage hockey set I started collecting. Looking for high grade 63-64 Parkies and C56 cards if you ever come across those and are looking to trade.

I know they're not vintage, but I'm collecting 1980/81 Topps (a NM-MT raw set). These were the first hockey cards I rememeber as a kid, and I still have about 200 scratched off, bent, rounded ones from back then. I'm trying to do an entire 50/50 centering (or close) set. No easy feat. I still need need about 75 cards (I think) and I've gone through thousands to get where I'm at. Why couldn't Topps just place the sheets into the cutting machines straight back then?

By the way, if anyone has any mint, centered 1980/81 Topps hockey, or want's to get rid of some packs, send me a PM.

    Thanks.

a dealer that I use and trust just bought a set and had the whole thing graded. Majority of the cards were PSA 8's with a couple psa 7's and 9's. His name is Brian Drent at 303 840 2784

  • Hey BobS.
I have a 1980-81 Topps Wayne Gretzky #3 RB. I just submitted it to PSA though. The card is unscratched but its slightly OC. Definetly Mint though.
I'm working on the 1988-89 OPC graded set. Only PSA 8 and 9's.
Need some feedback from you other hockey collectors. What do you all think? Would it be a good investment or a waste of money and time....??? But it seems halfway affordable.
With the exception of the Hull and Shanahan RC's i got six cards graded already and i'm working on the rest of the set (raw).

  • Check out "Teemu" on the Set Registry for 64-65 Topps Tall Boys. I hear he's looking to sell the entire set.
I collect Vintage Hockey cards in PSA 8 or better.
  • Superpunk, That last post was for you. I'm obviously new to this posting thing.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Feel a little bit better. For several years now all i've collected was Chris Pronger, Al MacInnis, and Keith Tkachuk cards. Just want to expand a little bit. Need a challenge if you know what i mean.
Nice to know that there are a few other hockey collectors!

I think vintage hockey is some of the most attractive material on the market. It's just so hard to find in the quality most collectors want. However, I think a lot has come out of hiding since PSA became popular and most of the prices suggest that there ARE many hockey collectors- AND outside of Canada.

Keep at it, all! Let the market know that hockey cards are on the move!

i tried to do a 55 parkhurst set and was about 20 cards shy when i decided to sell them. i want to scream when i think of it and this post is not helping. had the horton, richard, harvey beliveau in psa 8(long before the registry)also had the lumley in a 6 which is hands down the hardest post war hockey card on the planet. i am not sure the pop but last i knew there was 1 8 and thats it.
hockey cards would get alot more attention if there wasn't just one guy to buy from. you have no option either you pay his asking price or you don't. no competition to keep prices affordable. i would be more than willing to here of another dealer that deals in 50's parkhurst/topps psa cards.
bmw seems to have nice sgc hockey cards and i would love to own the joliet postcard he has on ebay right know. the 51 lach he has is super nice also.

  • Quick question: On the 1980-81 Topps Hockey, how much will PSA knock down a card if it is scratched off?

    awsome

yawie i am sure you have seen this.
too bad psa can't make a holder that fits that issue.

i've definitely seen the vezina and even put in a token bid. i'm not sure why psa has been inconsistent with their holdering of c56's and c55's. most are in the typical tobacco holder, but others - particularly with the c55's - are in holders like the vezina's. i know cards from those sets can be irregularly sized, but i'm not sure that that necessitates such a holder. i have a few c56's that are holdered in slabs like the vezina's. fortunately they're only 3's, so i'm not really worried about the cards moving around in the inner sleeve, but i certainly would be if i bought a psa 7 copy of a major hockey tobacco card.

also, i can't say for sure since i don't know the dimensions of the cards, but it looks like the joliat postcard might fit inside an oversized psa slab like the ones used for the '64 topps giants.

There are quite a few dealers in Canada who deal in high grade 1950's cards in graded or ungraded form. Some have high prices and some are quite reasonable.
Jackstraw-That Lumley card is real tough - have you ever seen a Quaker Oats version? I know of quite a few collectors who are putting the Quaker Oats set together but cannot find that card period. Len Pottie had one once and sold it immediately. I would bet that the three quaker oats cards that are tough to find are as difficult as any post-war card in any sport.

    camel-

I don't know if PSA would even grade scratched 80-81s. I'd be curious to know if they do (though I'd certainly never buy one.)

    aro,
the quaker oats version is one of the toughest sets on the planet!!!! the 1 lumley,33 clancy and 37 richard are for some reason tougher than the rest. when i say tough i mean impossible you could probably flag every dealer in the world and probably get nothing.i would imagine there are a few sitting around in attics in northern canada but good luck they are going to have to be at the right show at the right time to get one>or someone is going to have to make a find and even then they are going to cost big dollars.i heard a story that a guy paid 13,000 for the richard green back raw, this was about 92 93 before the grading frenzy when i would go the whiteplains show and the only psa dealer was kris keppler.

  • The 1936 Champion Postcards SCG 92 Joliat card discussed earlier in this thread ending recently on Ebay at $225 (see earlier post in this thread with link). The BIN was $2000 and the reserve wasn't met. All I can say is wow! That was a nice item, offered by a national dealer and NOONE apparently was interested in it. It would be one thing to have the item not sell but it's safe to say this one didn't come close to the reserve. Do you think this is a case of the recession blues or overestimation of the value of a card?

I think it's a symptom of not many people knowing who Aurel Joliat was- even though he was a superstar of his era. The pool of early hockey collectors is still pretty small. $2000 seems kind of high despite its rarity and condition. I know I'd rather spend that on a Plante or Beliveau rookie. (Different eras, but same team, eh.)
