o.k., here's my question.. I recently started collecting the State Quarters, I have them in a quarter map.
well, I had them in my closet (In a box) and they Still look like they've been smoked... is this because I smoke? or does smoking affect them?

It's chemicals in the cardboard. It's called toning. If the toning is pretty colors collectors pay more money for them.
Camelot
How much are they now? $4.00 a pack?
2 packs a day times 365 days a year equals $2920 or just about a really nice PR66CAM Barber quarter.
I quit using nicotine about 12 years ago, what a brutal habit to let go of!
My Barbers
The real crime is taxing the poor, who smoke the most, for good reason.. it alleviates hunger pains.

You'll notice I said "just about" a nice PR66CAM Barber Quarter.

is allowed to stay on it for many years it may permanently damage
the coin.
The coins are nice though..
see? My Auctions "Got any 1800's gold?"
As you can see, it's a riot here. Good luck with the coins. Why not get two sets, one for the display card, and one put away in a safe environment?

It certainly affects slabs -- I purchased some coins from a customer of mine who was* a heavy smoker and even after leaving the slabs out in fresh air for several weeks they still smelled.
* No longer a smoker, due to death by lung cancer.
