smoking and coins?

o.k., here's my question.. I recently started collecting the State Quarters, I have them in a quarter map.
well, I had them in my closet (In a box) and they Still look like they've been smoked... is this because I smoke? or does smoking affect them?

Smoking doesn't hurt them as long as they keep it below 2 packs a day. Quarters have iron lungs you see.
It's chemicals in the cardboard. It's called toning. If the toning is pretty colors collectors pay more money for them.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I only smoke maybe a pack a day, so hopefully it wont hurt them... but TY for the advice, I think I'll wrap it tomorrow just in case..

Sulfur is one of the meanest chemical to coins, there's lots of sulfur in cardboard. Let your coins breathe often, which means you have to look at them more often.

  • so it's better out of plastic or in? I'm lost now...hehe

Skinny - Tar and other chemicals in the second hand smoke, can place a tan to brown coating on a coin, which is not very appealing. If you do smoke and I advise you to quit, I would do it in another room from where the coins are stored. While coins may have metal lungs, people are left with living tissue and a lot worse then bad toning can effect that living tissue to say nothing about the cardiovascular system. Plastic is ok as long as it's hard and not plyable,PVC makes plastic softand, PVC is also mean to coins.Sorry to mix you up.

There's certain things that you can smoke that will make your average coins look like they could be worth a lot. Other smoking material will make your coins look like they have whirling neon toning on them. This only works for the person smoking. Be Careful!
    "Have a nice day!"
  • What comes to my mind is how much do cigarettes cost each year.
How much are they now? $4.00 a pack?
2 packs a day times 365 days a year equals $2920 or just about a really nice PR66CAM Barber quarter.

I quit using nicotine about 12 years ago, what a brutal habit to let go of!

Ok, I can't resist. I didn't start smoking until age 18, in fact, I despised it and never have bben prone to peer presure. However, it's not my place to tell anyone how to pursue happiness and second hand cigarette smoke is much less harmful than second hand pubic transportation exhaust.. yet a cop in LA will not hesitate to write you a $100 ticket while standing next to a diesel public bus spewing 100X more harmful fumes. It's nothing less than politics run amok.

The real crime is taxing the poor, who smoke the most, for good reason.. it alleviates hunger pains.

If the brown scum that accumulates on coins from cigarette smoke
is allowed to stay on it for many years it may permanently damage
    the coin.
    Tempus fugit.
  • The only reason I collect coins is I have all of this extra money laying around since I quit smoking. I have a lot of coins now but for some reason I want to choke the living s&#@ out of everyone.

    The coins are nice though..

    Welcome to the Boards, skinny!

As you can see, it's a riot here. Good luck with the coins. Why not get two sets, one for the display card, and one put away in a safe environment?

  • I don't know how much it affects the coins themselves, but I'd say it's certainly possible based on how smoke residue can accumulate elsewhere.

It certainly affects slabs -- I purchased some coins from a customer of mine who was* a heavy smoker and even after leaving the slabs out in fresh air for several weeks they still smelled.

    * No longer a smoker, due to death by lung cancer.
