I really like ANACS but the last few years they seem to be grading a little harder on MS coins. I have cracked out several and have got a higher grade at PCGS. mike

I buy a lot of ANAC's coins, especially lincoln varieties. I have a bodacious S/S 1974 Heavy Cameo Ike PF 40% and a 1900-0 Morgan graded ms65 with beautiful gold peach toning around the rims, I think it has a shot at 66, certainly is nicer than some I just unloaded in another services holders. I love the little holders for copper and have a 65 RB IHC on the way. They sell cheaper, but in many cases they are just as nice. Like any other coin look at it, then look at the holder. I have trained myself to totally ignore the holder when I have the coin in my hand.
  • I have heard that they are hard on gold coins. I personally had an ANACS graded gold coin get upgraded by PCGS. Many early coppers are in ANACS holders, probably because of their net grading policy. I’m thinking that ANACS might be more experienced than anyone else when it comes to early coppers, but I’m not sure about that.

  • We have had good luck with them. 10 coins at $10 each for 10 days is hard to beat.

I've seen a few Morgans that didn't have 2 lines in the cotten balls that ANACS graded Fine. That's a sore spot with me. Should have been VG because that's the first thing you see when you look at a circ Morgan. Otherwise their Morgan & Barber grades in both MS & circ are pretty much on par with PCGS or NGC though they call some Morgans DMPL and PCGS only calls them PL. I really like their Error Service for mint errors.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Buying anacs coins is like a box of chocolates. Most of the coins I sent to them recenlty were given really low grades I thought and one coin got net graded-scratched for a tiny scratch on the reverse.
They are not worth alot anyway so thats ok.
Maybe I made them mad because I used a small piece of tape on the flips to keep them closed. I didn't want the half dimes to get lost.
They put please do not tape or staple flips on the form they sent back.

I'm always submitting to anacs. As stated above, you can't beat their 10-10-10 special. What are the coins you are thinking of submitting? It can make a difference.

Hey! If you send in 100 coins and don't mind waiting three months (!) ACG will grade them at $4.95 per coin!

ANACS will grade a PL a PL and a DMPL a DMPL, unlike PCGS. PCGS for some reason wants to hold down the population of PL & DMPLs. Their ploy now is to to call PLs altered surfaces.

i don't get coins slabed, but have known 3 of the anacs graders for a long time. they are 1 heckuva knowledgeable bunch, and i value their experience tremendously. as far as grading "accuracy", they offer an opinion for a fair price, same as any other plastic service. the "accuracy" is in the eyes of the beholder.

btw, their slabs are the easiest to crack out.

I too have found that they've been grading pretty hard on MS Morgans lately. I like their service. Great on attributions of variety coins.

I dunno about ANACS anymore. Recently I bought a MS65 Jamaican coin that's 64 at best (63 surfaces with a 65 strike.) I've also seen a China "Dragon dollar" counterfeit selling on ebay in an ANACS holder. And they seem to use 60/61 more than any other service, usually for "net" graded coins, but with no mention of the problem on the holder (but it's always a minor problem, like a very light cleaning/wipe.) They are the cheapest place to get foreign coins slabbed (I'm an evil darksider at heart, hehe) and I've never seen a US counterfeit in an ANACS slab. May be the top service for error coins, however. IMHO, they're the best of the low cost slabbers, if you're looking to save a few bucks... but not up to PCGS' standards by a long shot

Plus, I can't find a decent storage box for their slabs... the Eagle brand boxes are too big for my purposes (small slab, huge box. In the words of the immortal Homer Simpson, doh!)

Circulated type is PERFECT for anacs. Good luck to you with them. One suggestion is to use the 10-10-10 special, or if you have enough coins, call customer service and they'll get you that figure, even if they aren't running the special publicly. If you can't get the special, make sure you use the Express service (10 working days), otherwise they can take up to 2 months to grade your coins. Unless you aren't in a rush, then...............image
One reason you see a lot of borderline mint state coins in anacs holders is that if the coin was "solid", then it would most likely go to ngc or pcgs. When selling, those two services will give you more bang for your buck, especially in the mint state grades. A lot of people, dealers and collectors alike, don't want to "waste" submission fees with pcgs or ngc, for bodybags, so the "borderline" pieces get sent to anacs, knowing that they may come back with "net" grades, but slabbed either way. For me, anything worth under $150 or so, can go to anacs for the $10. Their resell numbers are still decent, and the stuff gets slabbed either way.

I have found ANACS to be extremely tough on all the coins I have submitted. I have had half dimes net graded for "scratch" that I can't even find with a 10X loop! I think they must use microscopes to grade. Much tougher on circulated coins than PCGS. I think I read a little while back that NGC had purchased ANACS.

  • I have had all but 1 ANACS coin cross at at least the same grade to PCGS. I even cracked some of my coins I sent to ANACS and sent to PCGS because ANACS was to tough IMO. I got upgrades on at least 1/3 of those coins. This of course is my experience but I would not hesitate to recomend ANACS coins to others. They are solid and IMO on par with PCGS and NGC.

The only three grading services I use are: PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. I have never had a problem
with quality for any of the three. Grading is excellent with all three and so is liquidity. I can't say
the same for the other grading services. My recommendation is to stick to these three. I also like
the fact that there are quality people behind these services and they are accessable at shows.

  • I pulled a 1909 S IH from an ANACS slab and had them look at it, they said it was counterfeit! I will never use them!

I pulled a simplistic comment from a Message Board thread and had others laugh at it, they said it was ludicrous! I will never value those comments!

I think ANACS is fine. All companies make mistakes, even with counterfeit detection. It goes with the territory. I think what's important is their warranty against grading mistakes and things like counterfeits. (I don't know, since I rarely use them because I can't stand their flimsy and under-sized holders.)
