History of PCGS slab designs.. what years.. ?? ..

Hi..

Does anyone know the years that the various styles of PCGS slabs were used? I know of four styles..

a) Dot Matrix Label
b) Label with very small letters "P C G S" across the top, with a full width green plastic plate with the company logo in gold letters embossed on it on the back..
c) Current style with the pale blue label, and the company logo in silver on the back..
d) An apparently short-lived fancy schmancy slab with a special name that I forgot, Premiere maybe??.. that was bigger than the regular slabs and had rounded sides..

Can anyone tell me the years that these designs were in use, and how long the current design has been in use? You can leave out all the special variants like the current bunch with flag labels and such..

Thanks,

Harv

  • Thats interesting, i just got an ike in the mail in a small slab. It wont stand up in a pcgs blue box. So i"m guessing thats the ones around 1986?

Does it rattle in the slab? All the dinky first gen's I've gotten rattle. But, I haven't gotten any with a "big" coin.

  • No rattle, but it is an ms 66 silver ike and it is toning around the edges, i dont think it is very airtight. It doesnt conveniently fit in any of the catagories from the other thread except it is a small slab. Light blue no bar code, date in upper left, serial number 6072036, cheap looking green paper on the back with pcgs running vertically down the left side. The green paper has postage stamp type perforations all around the perimeter. The coin looks better than 66 but i think i will keep it as is for now.

you have a 1st gen slab... dinky maybe, but if you ever sell and have extra characters on the title, 1st gen always gets you freebie hits image

My PR66 JFK (1964--- RUSS???) looks like an easy 67 now...

PS- I have the newest slab variety with a war nick that rattles ALL DAY LONG! They never fixed the problem (TomB has one, too, so we figured we have the only new slabs with rattling coins... COOL!)

To heck with the coin, I'm saving the slab ... recently won a MS-65 1952-S Jeff nickel on Teletrade that was not pictured. To my surprise, it came in one of the old small, green label, dot matrix-printed, small "rattler" slabs dating to pre-89. (And, it sure rattles, alright.) The slab is more interesting and collectible than the coin, considering I only paid $8. I'm hanging onto this baby as a piece of memorabilia from the early days of slabbing!
