Another PCGS mystery!! My coins are brown!!!

Back about 2 months ago I bought a 1979-S Type 2 Proof Set from Nick T. Last month I sent the whole proof set (sealed) to PCGS for grading. This is the proof set that the not genuine quarter came from. Well the coins are back, and not looking good. I sent in a white proof set with heave cameos, and this is what came back.

I called and left a message for Charlie, hoping that he can shed some light on what happened to my proof set. Looks like it got washed in hard water...image

Good luck with that. Considering you sent it in the original Mint packaging your frustration must be running high.

Man Marty, that's terrible. I'd love to hear how it turns out. Looks like they saw some humidity. I wonder what the envelope looked like when it got to PCGS?

    or am I missing something?

Crazy thought, but when we send coins to PCGS they usually are flown. Could it be that in some cases with the cold air up high and warm air when landing that condensation collects inside these mint sealed holders ans causes the paper cardboard to run?? Or maybe causes the coins to haze yp from a chemical reaction.

    Just a thought.

  • am I seeing that correctly that the "in" is also brown or toned?

I'm waiting to hear about my coins but you probably feel the way I felt... argh!

  • MadMarty - How could the quarter not have been genuine? Was the proof set tampered with? Did someone alter the quarter?

If the coins showed up at PCGS other than white you would think they woulda contacted you and sed "hey these are brown; you still want them graded.

A thought on the quarter. It might be a T-1 and if you submitted it as T-2 maybe the grader entered in the wrong computer code?

The coins look like they have dip residue on them.

I just talked to Charlie at PCGS and they are going to take care of the problem. Being the coins were graded 66s it must have happened in transit to PCGS. I guess I'll clean them up and send them back out... Thanks Charlie, you renewed my faith in PCGS!!!
