Yet another weird [also costly] eBay auction ends.

All I can say is what a drag it will be for the seller to file a non paying bidder and wait and wait and wait to get his fees refunded because of someone wanting to goof off.

Or, was this a shill bid to prevent the piece for going too low a price?

I know the nay sayers out there will say "Maybe the bidder will go through with the purchase". Wanna bet?

Here is the auction:

1907 High Relief $20 auction

Comments

  • It ended with the BIN, so it wouldn't have been a shill bidder. I don't understand where you're going with this thread? Are you saying that he didn't pay?

    Feedback reeks suspiciously of shill.............................
  • I was watching this one too, and I don't think it was a shill since that would make no sense for this one:

    1. The auction had a reserve, which if you use wouldn't make sense to use a shill. The auction was at around 22K, and the reserve was not met.
    2. It ended with the Buy It Now price, and as a seller you would have to be a moron to set your BIN lower than you want to sell the coin for, unless you are desperate for cash. And then again it would make even less sense to use a shill for the BIN with only a few hours left in the auction.

I agree this one was a little pricey, but for that coin it's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Numismedia lists the unc HR at $29,380 for a 65, and since PCGS doesn't recognize the proof varieties, there could be more to this coin than meets the eye. If it gets crossed to NGC who does recognize HR Proofs, and they decide this is a proof coin, then the value goes up quite a bit. The whole proof/business strike debate on the HRs is a topic for another thread though.

A couple of weeks ago we were talking about this guy: Text He had bid on $30K worth of stuff and had a feedback of -1 but look at him now. You never can tell.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • jtryka,

Pricey is right, in 2002 according to Heritage MS65s have gone from 23-25.8k. This one went for 27.6k .

Bidder has 3 transactions in nearly 2 years, none in nearly 8 months, never left anyone feedback, history of not paying, etc.

Last but not least, she pulls off the Buy It Now in the next to last second? Why did she wait if she was going to use BIN?

Too many suspecious facts with this one. I could be wrong but am willing to bet I am not....if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....

What would be the motivation to shill at the last minute, with the buy it now? It doesn't make sense. Unless the seller is trying to set a benchmark for future listings of similar coins, but that seems like a stretch here. I say the kids got a hold of the Ebay handle, and had some fun.

  • I don't even look at centsles auctions, because he deals in that stupid PCI gold crap.image Dealers who deal in that stuff are only looking to make a profit and not to positively influence the hobby.

  • Desert,

It is pricey, but look at the differences between the PR and MS coins on the Heritage archives. NGC PR-64s have ranged from 22.4K to 26.5K, so if this buyer thinks it might cross to an NGC PR-65, then it might turn out to be a fair price. I can't say from the photos whether or not it would cross as a proof, but it's irrelevant. I can think of no reason to use a shill to buy it now on a 27,000 coin (look at how much went down the drain in final value fees, vs. zero final value fees on an auction that doesn't meet the reserve. As far as setting a pricing trend, well anyone that would buy an HR off eBay should be smart enough to know the market for the coin, and would check recent auctions etc. for the current pricing level. The other consideration is the availability of this coin, there have been only 7 offered on Heritage in the last year, so it might have been worth it to spend an extra grand to get one, at least for this buyer.

PS-There was a PCGS MS-65 Wire Rim that sold for $26,450 last January (lot 8500 in the 2002 FUN Signature sale), but of course that was a really awesome coin in a first generation holder.
  • That coin looks to be worth every penny! The 1933 has sparked alot of interest in Saints! Buy all you can!
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!
  • I think the ebay seller should have protected itself better. The seller should have put
something like, " If a bidder has a 20 or less positive feedback on ebay, they need to
check with the seller before the buyer makes a bid."
  • I hate to say it WSM, but I think I agree with you. Needless to say though, I would probably not buy an HR for that money off eBay, I would have to see it before I laid down the cash.
  • Coin looks fairly priced. Based on the scans (yes I know, you can't grade from the scan) it looks at least solid for the grade, if not higher end 65...I don't see any distractions. The coin jumps about 10k in 66 so maybe the guy is taking a 2 or 3 thousand dollar shot at another 10k.

  • This particular ebay buyer picked up another neg (complaint) last night. The buyer
got a negative for not coming through with the cash for a Ferrari. The buyer used BIN
on the Ferrari and this U.S. gold coin.

benloe, why would anyone snipe using the BIN option while all the while risking that option's disappearance when reserve was met? It just doesn't make sense to go this route.

It's gotta be a kid or my ex-wife pushing the button.......
  • Wanna bet that there is positive feedback for the buyer? I think so.

Deadbeat AIN'T the word for it. A 15 year old punk as one seller said. Sure would hate to be a seller trying to get my fees back. Should be a pre qualification for hi ticketed items. Come to think about it your suppose to prove the ability to pay on bids over $15k!

  • This Ebay bidder was a +1 earlier this week. Now this bidder is -3. One Ferrari, two Corvettes,
one Chrysler Prowler, and a $389,000 house set this bidder back. Ebay seems to have been
slow to NARU this bidder. I wonder if natcoin is waiting payment for the 1907 $20 gold coin?
  • Where's our mint bag Peacekeeper? Couple 'o bops with it, and the little punk won't ever mess with a coin again!

  • Hey guys, I told you so!! Way back when. I smelled this turd a mile away.

I was watching that $20 HR auction and when she swooped in and used the BIN I knew a scam was on.

Amazing how ebay allowed her to go for so long w/o unregistering. But then again ebay is the wild West of auctioning.
