Just found a weird 1986-D Kennedy Half

Was going through some rolls today and found this 1986-D Half. The coin is missing a little piece of nickel layer over Kennedy's head. You can see the copper.

Never tried doing an attachment so hope it comes out.

    attachment didn't go through. Sorry.
  • It sounds like a possible lamination error.

A lamination error is not impossible but doesn't seem likely. My guess is
that either there was a hole in the sheet which made the obverse Cu/Ni
clad layer or it is a "pit" with copper colored toning. Look at the metal
around the edge of the hole. Does it appear to have been pushed in by
the strike? How big is the hole? Is it regularly shaped?

The area that shows the copper is oval and looks like it has been struck. It is about a centimeter accross. Looks like it was a piece of metal missing from the sheet before it was struck.

What a tease!! image How about a close up so we can tell what we're looking at?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Wow......... The irony of the coin might make it really collectable. That doesn't appear to be a lamination error, probably just a hole in the sheet metal.

Looks awful busy around that hole. Maybe damaged. We do need a close-up.

An trapped gas bubble that burst & clamshelled
A ding in the coil itself
    Post mint damage
    Need closeup!

Here is a close up. Coin is kind of creepy. Bought about 20 original rolls of 1986-D Halves and coin came from one of these rolls.

Interesting. If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing it looks like there was a lamination that was knocked off when the edge of another JFK hit it and left reed marks on each side of it.
