Ethical question on selling coins.

Do you think it is ok to make reference to a coin forum board about a potential grade of a coin when selling it?

  • I don't think it's a problem to reference a thread, as that is in the public domain, but if you reference a particulat post/member, I would ask that person's permission first. I seem to recall anaconda making reference to a thread once, and someone must have raised a fuss since he later started a thread to apologize for it. You might want to look that one up.

I see no problem with it. Although I did comment on a previous thread that I felt it would be good ethics to just say that is what the intention is.

Instead of going nuts asking people and saying your just curious.

Than 5 minutes later running an auction saying this is what everybody said. And stretching it at that.

    thats just how I feel.

  • If your speaking about the auction one of this board members is running , he states the board concensus was MS64+ but called the coin MS65/66 himself. I think he is being very honest in that case bringing up the message boards opinion. If your not speaking of that one then I would say anything is ok as long as its true.

    Hey Marine,
This is how I see it. The best way to do this is to copy the picture temporarily to your online picture saver site (I use AOL) then link JUST the picture to the forum. This way no one knows exactly where the coin came from.

    This saves two things,
1)You will not upset someone by trying to second guess their grading
2)If you link the Ebay site to the forum, it will recieve a lot of hits to the thread sparking possible interest in the coin. Now, if someone was allready interested from the forum in said coin, then you might burn a bridge because now, you have sparked others interest in the coin and started a bidding war.

This is the exact reason I reccomended we all list our EBAY names on a thread so we know who is who and if we are bidding against each other.

I have found myself bidding against a forum member and spoke with this member, we decided that one of us wanted the coin more than the other without bidding back and forth running up the price (Beyond what it was worth, just so we could have it)

    Hope this helps,
    Ray
