Help needed with establishing value of unusual coin

All,
I have come across a "sample coin" and is slabbed by PCGS. It is graded as MS00. Anyone know anything about these coins? It is a 1999 Delaware State quarter. Are there any population numbers on these coins, anywhere? The cert number on this coin is: 07727188
Thanks for any information
Kevin

    Kevin,

The sample slabs are pretty common, and are used as promotional items to display the PCGS holder. Some people collect them, but they're not expensive. It's still a fun piece. PCGS also chose not to grade sample coins from the mint, but would occasionally holder them. I have an experimental sac in a similar holder.

  • Dog97 or Conder101 come to mind first hand as who to ask, although I'm sure there are plenty of others here who know what these go for. I would venture to say $5-10.
  • You should see it at the auction site: here. I don't know how some people can sleep at night. There is some board member that uses the tag line, "Pocket change, nah, don't have any, sold it on ebay" starting to see the real humor in it.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
  • These are giveaways from PCGS used to advertise what their slabs look like. Other than being a novelty, they are worth only the face value of the coin they contain.

What do you think the odds are they will sell for $100?

I'm a Sample Slab collector. I collect them by date, mintmark, grade, denomination and slab variety. They are given away free but usually sell for $5-$10 on eBay. I have paid almost $40 for some of these worthless coins but let me assure you that a rainbow toned Morgan in a Sample Slab is worth more than $1. image Late silver dimes were the most common coin before the State Quarters were issued but you can find Wheat Cents, War Nickels, Steel Cents, foreign coins and even Modern Commems in them. Most grading companies issue them.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

last year i had some sample slabs with state quarters in them from all the different grading services and multiples! and i saw an ad in coin world classified ads offering to buy them for 10 dollars each so i sold them to a gentleman in florida!

so for me they were worth ten dollars and i was happy to get that!

maybe he then sold them on ebay for more??? who knows!

  • Amazing, always someone looking for suckermoney.
  • Like Dog I am also a sample slab collector, although I just go for slab varieties and not the dates and mints of the coins. So far I know of 37 varieties of sample slabs plus two subvarieties (I own 32 of them). While I have bid as much as $40 dollars for a rare sample slab, and there are a couple I would go higher on, most of them are common and worth in the $3 - $5 range. The two pieces shown in the auction are common. PCGS distributed thousands of the state quarter slabs and probably continued producing them all year long for all of the states. At times it isn't unusual to see year sets, both mints, of them up for sale on ebay. Typially they are listed as "state name" sample, but, without checking my notes, the Philadelphia New Jersey is labeled New Jersey / sample and the Denver CT is labeled Sample Connecticut. Those two subvarieties I still need. The Denver NJ and Phily CT are labeled in the normal fashion. I don't know why the diference.
