Looks like what you got there, is a case of silver termites. image
There once was a place called
    Camelotimage
  • Looks like someone just dug the "28" off those 1928 P Peace Dollars.

Probably a dentist in 1929, working on fillings.

Looks like super heavy duty bag marks or post mint damage.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I have a possibility. During the early sixties, in an attempt to discourage collectors (and others) from hoarding the silver dollars, some casinos began oblitherating the date on the coins. The theory was that without a date the collectors wouldn't want them and the regular customers wouldn't want to keep them as souviners because they were damaged. Of course as the value of the metal rose above the face value of the coin the damage didn't matter because they then became simple bullion.

I think Conder has something there as he jolted my memory bank. I believe he is right and Casinos did do this to cut down on the dollars leaving Nevada.

That's why I love this place. I never heard that story about the casinos before! Very interesting!

That would have been a great job to feature on the "What's My Line" TV show - "I mutilate coins to remove the date".

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
