Need knowledge about the 1949 Leaf football set

I want to put together a vintage football set and think I've decided on the 49 Leaf set in PSA 5-8. It has the right mix of rarity, price, and vintage looks. I realize the rarity will make it difficult but the hunt is half the fun for me. Not interested in a set I could conceivably complete in short order. Any info appreciated.

  • It's a pretty tough set to put together in the higher grades. The cardstock is very soft, and makes getting high grades very difficult. There are still quite a few cards that don't have an 8 yet. The cards are tough to the point that many people don't even bother with them. The supply is very low, and I think this has had an affect on the low demand. If there were more available in higher grades I think there would be more of an interest to pick them up. It's a set worth going after, you just have to think outside the normal 8-9 range people are normally accustomed to.

    Bosoxphan,

This is one of the two most difficult post-war sets to assemble in psa 8 or better with prices for 8s usually above smr when offered--which is seldom. I have 12 8s and 2 9s. There are two collectors above me on the registry who have more of the cards but in poorer condition.
If you are looking for a vintage set that is relatively easy to put together in 8(versus the early Bowman sets) I would suggest 55 Topps All-America.
  • Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I'm about 2/3 done with a 1935 Goudey set in overall PSA 6.5 condition, and the rest is probably going to be slow going. I have no illusions of doing the 49 Leaf set in high grade, most cards will probably be in the 5-7 range. Hope to keep the overall grade at or over 6. I love the really tough ones. The 35 Goudey set is a killer and this one looks to be even worse. Are there many ungraded examples out there? Is the set really as rare as the population report indicates or are people just not sending their ungraded cards in to be graded?
  • Bosoxphan,

I have one of the 1949 FB sets on the registry. I have a fair number of extra ones graded in PSA 5 and PSA 6. Let me know what you might want and I can put together a good starter set for you. Jim-707
