Any tips on dark scans

I've got an HP4300C scanner and Corel Photohouse 5. Everything, especially clad, comes out way too dark. I can lighten with the software a bit but it looses color and doesn't look natural. I've tried lid open and closed but doesn't make much of a difference. Are there ways to supplement the light, maybe flooding the bed with the lid open? How is everyone getting these great scans? Is dig camera the way to go?

TWQG- I have never used a scanner for coins so I am no help with that question but I do think digital cameras take a more natural looking picture. It is still hard to get a good picture of a dark coin but it can be done. mike

Prop the top end of the slab or 2x2 on a pencil on the scan bed. The angle of light makes the scan more brilliant.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
