A Thread for Everyone who collects coins....................

What's your opinion on the best coins for this group?

As coin collector, I find myself wanting to collect coins from different series, but not necessarily collecting the entire set in any way--or just collect cheaper, more common dates and examples. I like coins with a story and something unique and more scarce/rare for that year.

I like to pick out one or a few scarcer/rarer/variations (including mint errors) coins from a series. Popular examples include such coins as the double die 1955 cent, 1937-D three-leg buffalo, coins w/ and w/o motto (especially gold), type 1 and type 2 coins, etc.

What coin(s) from a series should a collector put on his or her list?

-Hunter

Some of my favorites:

1917 type 1 & type 2 SLQ
1908 $20 Saints no motto & motto (throw the 1907 no motto in too)
1908 $10 Indians no motto & motto (throw the 1907 no motto in too)
1913 Buffalo type 1 & type 2
1937-D Buffalo three legged (already mentioned)

Now your favorites!!!

  • It sounds like you have the best strategy that all collectors should follow, be it type, set, date, error collectors, etc..., buy and collect what interests you and what you like. Ok, I'll throw in a few more interesting pieces IMO.

How about some must have moderns -

    1971,1972 P,D Ikes
    Any 1965-1967 SMS cameos
    1982,1983 P,D MS coins
    1976 T1 Ikes
    Wide-Rim SBA

too many more to list, but these are fun coins in higher grades, and should be fun locating.

If you like nickels, you can get a great set for relatively little money.

I'm putting together a set of transition year coins. In the 5 cent denomination, that includes 3 1883's (shield, No Cents Liberty, and With Cents Liberty), two 1913's (type I and II Buffalos), two 1938-D's (Buffalo and Jefferson [can be expanded to include d?d and D/S Buffalos] and two 1942's (type I and II. The stories behind them are interesting, also. The 1883 No Cents Liberty nickel has the story of the guy (Josh [?]) who plated them and passed them off as $5 gold pieces. The 1942 nickels had an alloy change to conserve metals needed for the war effort.

  • I'm kinda in the same boat Hunter, I've decided that my next area to look into will be nice "interesting" morgan dollars. That should keep me busy for a good long time - even if I don't get a complete set of anything!

  • I would include some of the coppers like the large cents and half cents. A nice Coronet type (1816-1857), Classic head (1808-1814),draped bust (1796-1807) even a chain if you budget allows.

  • A lot of interesting posts already. A lot of these I have thought about collecting and some I've overlooked. One could collect specific mint marks from a series--like the O or CC (morgans, gold, etc.).

I originally got started with just a few Buffalo variations and now I'm putting together an S mint mark set and my goal is to eventually complete the entire set in MS. Still haven't found a nice three legimage One I could afford anyway. A nice MS63 went off on ebay, but it was too much $$$$. I'd like a nice slider or a MS60/61 PQ. Anyway, look forward to more posts.

  • I've always liked all of the seated types (w/ w/o arrows, motto, etc.) especially the arrows and rays quarters and halves--common but cool.

I have always liked Liberty gold and they sure look nice in mint state.image mike
  • Have you thought of doing a 19th or 20th cen type set? You then can get an good overview of all the US coins? CHRIS
  • Myself,

    3 cent silver
    half dime seated
    barber dime, quarter, half
    seated liberty 25c
    WL 50c
  • How about a Sacagawea Dollar which sold, not too long ago, for (correct me if Im wrong) about $5,000.

In all seriousness, I think its a great thread. Since you missed out on the 1933 Double Eagle, I would go with a key date Washington 32d, 32s, 34d, 36d.

But Shield Nickels are a favorite too (eventhough I dont even own not one)

If you want a coin with a story and a lot of history, you have to get a pillar dollar. It's slipping a little over to the darkside but the US monetary system was developed around this coin
