1955 Lincolns

I just received a roll of BUs as part of a refund for an overgraded 1899 O Morgan I bought(INS slabbed). Half of the roll has horizontal die cracks through the hair and forehead, the L,I and B are missing and there is doubling on the last 5. Seems like a lot of errors for a single coin to have! I have not looked at many Lincolns! Maybe some of you can tell me if this is common to 55s. I would also like to see some of your best pics to use as comparisons, I would like to see if I have any 66s at least.
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!

  • The description of the last 5 in the date sounds like a poor man's doubled die. The missing letters could be a filled die. Don't know about the die cracks. I haven't heard of these diagnostics being on a poor man's doubled die. It sounds like an interesting oddity. image

I have a couple of the poor man's (send me money! image) No die cracks on them... just some light doubling...

You have a poor man with a die crack and with a filled die... VERY cool!!!

I have a few of these cracked head Lincolns that I have saved while looking for years for a 1955/1955 (never found one-wound up buying one in 1963)
They are not rare and they appeared for sale along with the poor mans double die. This year seemed to have its share of die problems.

That sounds like 1955 poorman's double die (which is actually a heavily worn die, by the way). The dies were in bad shape for these and typically (if not always) have the large die crack in the hair. It is often referred to as "scalped".

  • I think I've seen a couple PMDDs with severe die cracks.
