  • Don: according to Bowers scale,my 1798/97 is rare. The total amount of all dimes minted in 1798 was 27550. Now when you look for the population of the 98/97 PCGS list 47.What about the other grading companies. How do you find the overall total to determine how rare your coin really is? The reason I'm asking this question is,I sent it in to PCGS and it came back in a body bag. They said the coin was damaged.By damage they meant scratches. NOTE:My dime looked a hella lot better then the quarter(about the same year) that was on E-Bay not too long ago.PCGS graded it a VF20 or 40(I'm not sure which one it was)That thing had scratches all over it plus it was worned pretty smooth.Mine had a few scratches but it was'nt smooth like that one. That one was really rough looking.

Thank you very much for your input.

NGC's board is NGCCoin, and they'll have pop numbers as well, but I don't know of any compiled aggregate data that would help. Perhaps one of the other guys does. As for holdering the coin, I'd choose ANACS since PCGS didn't want to holder it. If you ever intend to sell it, I think the ANACS will command the same premium. I'd be primarily interested in scans of the coin and authenticity. I don't believe you would be selling that piece to a rookie. My guess is that the buyer would be sophisticated enough to look at the coin and make their own judgement. If you would like the coin holdered with no grade, NGC is going to offer authentication/encapsulation/attribution only with no grade starting next month. I hope this helps.

  • Don: Thank you for that information.I appreciate it.I think I waill send it to ANAC.It's not that I want to sell it,I just want tp preserve it along with a grade.
    Don,have a nice day.
