I was looking at half cents on Ebay and came across this one and was wondering what could have caused the colors.

A poor job at darkening the coin after it was badly cleaned.

By the way, how do you recolor a coin, anyway?

Someone probably tried a light acid wash on the coin and then tried to darken it. You have to wonder what was better, the corrosion or how it looks now. Dellers Darkener will darken up copper coins. Oil, shoe polish...........................
