Effect of acetone on Barber half.

I just acquired a VF Barber half which has quite a bit of dirt on it. I was planning on giving it a bath in pure acetone. Does acetone physically effect the coin's surface? Is there a better way to remove the grime? Thanks.

Hey, OnlyBuffalos, what are you doing with a Barber?image No, acetone won't physically alter the metal. Not sure it's all that great for grime, though.

BTW, welcome aboard! Got proof JFKs?

  • Only Buffalos was my great grandfather's name. Apparently in his later years he woudn't eat any meat except bison meat. Just retired and got back to collecting coins after 40 years. A lot has changed in the interim. Much more emphasis on investment and grading. Quality of related material --- especially literature, supplies vastly better. Availability of coins and price references also much much better.

  • Acetone does great as a degreasing agent and it doesn't affect the coinage metal or toning. It will not do much on regular dirt. For that try distilled water, possibly a little mild soap.
