Thought I'd get the feel a little. Bought a nice au58 slider coin pcgs.
Same price slabbed or not. It's a beauty, eye appeal looks 64 with only the slightest bit of rub.
Also bought the book Barber quarters by david lawrence 2nd edition.
I know thats boring so I looked at 1900 pr64 great soft colors and eye appeal, but had some splotchy toning I did not like on reverse.
All the while holding back on looking at a 1893 ngc pr 66 cameo they had.
Finally I said bring it out. I could see the cameo from across the room on this small coin. It also looked frosted.Another member here said ngc is tight on the dcam. But that doesn't matter to me.
Dealer wants 3350.00 for it. He is usually high on things but has a lot of inventory. Not on these proofs though.
So now I bought the book first. So should I grab it? I did notice a very few minute white spots and not sure if it's from dipping or what.
Any response would be appreciated.

I have no real advice on the proof quarter. Sound very nice though. I don't care for the proofs too much myself. I prefer the business strikes. I do have an 1893 Proof half (PCGS 64) that I paid $950.00 for in '97. It's the only proof coin I own. It's nicely mirrored, yet fairly heavily toned. Too many colors to pass up.
Anyway, welcome to Barberville.
Dave
I really think I'm going to enjoy the barbers. Even If I only own this one proof.
I come on here for the meetings I was ordered to attend.

I'm just tossing it around but am getting pretty excited about it.
It truly is a nice piece.
thanks, stman
Unless you're really really familiar with the subtle differences between Cam & DCam etc I wouldn't reccommend buying $3,000 Barbers, especially ones with spots or less than attractive tone. If you ever sell the buyer will see the same problems you did. Cameo Barbers are not rare and there are plenty of nice ones to chose from.
The Barber book you mentioned is a really cool book.

Frank

This statement is both true and false; it just depends on perspective. Most people view the series as type. If one looks at the series as a type coin collector (which most of us do) it is true that cameo Barber quarters are not rare. There are plenty of really attractive coins on the market. However, if one starts to collect these pieces by date the statement is way off the mark. There are several years in the series where cam or cam- is the best one could ever hope to attain. My guess is that the there will probably be only a couple of examples that will make the gem cameo grade for the following years: 1899, 1900, 1902, 1904, 1905, 1906, and the 1914 . The 1908 and 1915 may never suface in cameo; if one does I'll be all over it like acne on a fry-cook!
You are correct, stman should be picky about the cameo contrast, especially for this year. He should only pay a premium if the coin looks like it could grade DCAM on any other day and if the coin is haze free and spot free.
