went through 45 Kennedy rolls from the bank today-update

So for $450 in Kennedy rolls. I netted 13 40% silver halves and 1 bicentennial AU/UNC with the "CE" missing from Independence on the reverse. Also, 2 Franklin halves, a 1960d and 62d. The 62d is fbl and was UNC until thrown in with these. Both the franklins have nice toning actually. Not really worth the effort. It is amazing how many 1971's and 1972's there were. They are on the whole a much better strike than the later years. Also, it is interesting how even the more recent coins had some sort of toning.

  • Im willing to bet the majority of UNC Kennedy's are sitting in some government vault since most of the time you don't find squat when you look through rolls!

I got three rolls from my credit union a while back; every coin was a 40%, with the exception of two. Of the two that weren't 40%, one was 90% and one clad. Not a bad haul, for face value. Of course, I owe this stroke of luck to a friendly teller, who remembered I was a coin collector and saved 'em for me. She could have bought them for herself, but didn't. She should be sainted. image

  • Matt--that's free entertainment. And I'm amazed that there are still any 40% halves in circulation.

Lord Marcovan--I would take that teller a little present.

I swear I won't start collecting any more new sets this month.

    I got a roll of halves last month that had three 40% halves. (lesse, that's 3 x 0.4 x 0.5.....)image
  • It's funny to see the shifting population is halves. Whenever I get a bunch to look though, I sort them by decade, and for the longest time, the 70s were the biggest population due to the swarms of 71-73 and Bicentennial pieces. But over the last year or so, the 90s have displaced them, and it seems quite infrequent to see a nice 77 or 79, or any from the early 80s. But man, look to the 95-98 period and that's all you see!

2 years ago when I took a $500 bag of Kennedy halves from the bank, one of the rolls was a bank wrapped roll of 1967 halves that was gorgeous. Unforunately, the original wrapper crumpled in my hands before I realized what had happened.

It was the same batch in which I found 10 rolls of 1985-D BU rolls of halves. All in all a fantastic bag.

The half hoard was not the only one I've hit accidentally. About five years ago, I got some grubby War nickels in change at the convenience store. I asked the seller if he had more; there were a dozen or so more in the till. Then I had him get more rolls from the safe (took a while because of the time release security thingie). I ended up with eight rolls of early Jeffs, more than half of them Warnicks. The odd thing was, the coins were all coated with some blackish gunk, like they had been in the bilge of a boat for years. Not that I complained. Silver is silver. I gave that clerk a tip.

I would have bought the credit union teller who scored me those 40% halves lunch or something, but she refused. What is strange is that this was a new branch office, and I had only been in there twice before, yet she remembered me and the fact that I collected coins. (This was kind of spooky until I remembered asking about safe deposit boxes on my first visit- I must have mentioned coins then.)

  • Better luck than I, I went through $600 dollars worth of halfs and only got 1 90% silver. Talk about a waste of time.
  • bought $40 bucks worth today at B of A (went to three other banks with no luck on getting halves) ~ one frickin peso but did get one 40%...thanks for bringing up the possibilities, I'll try it again when I get time

  • So far I have never found a Silver Kennedy in the few rolls that I have purchased, but there is only one bank that carries halfs and you have to beg them to go retrieve them.

  • Most of the time you can ask the Head Teller to order them for you. Most banks get an order once or twice a week.

I have been trying to talk my bank into ordering me a new $1000 bag of halves. I keep getting the excuse that they can only get rolls and I have to go tot he main mank (downtown Chicago) for any chance at a full bag.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Agree with wolfwing. Most banks have a merchant teller that will order you a $500 box or less of halves. It's just a matter of whether they value you as a customer for other banking business that you might do there. At my local bank, they even supply me with boxes of fresh wrappers to "dispose" of my sorted halves. Of course, the tacit agreement is that I will NOT return my unwanted halves to their branch (instead they go to a local credit union where I'm also a member.) I have between a 2-3% success rate from $500 boxes, which isn't a lot, but I almost always find a few 40s Walkers and/or 50s Franklins in every box. It's a lot better odds than shooting in the dark asking for a few rolls here and there. I've gotten about 7 full rolls of AU clads by asking here and there, but it takes much more time and is apparently a rare occurence in my area. I've also noticed that certain major banks have less silver in their boxes than others. At least in California...

I would be surprised if that were true. I was under the impression that the US Mint disposed/melted most of their clad inventory during the big Silver Bull run in late 70s/ early80s. If not, sooner or later they will have to release them for sale or melt them for use in their Silver Eagles--Supposedly the Mint has run out of silver bullion inventory this year and will now have to purchase silver on the market. One thing I've noticed is that my retrieval of 40% clads has directly reflected the mintages from '65-'69. Most of my netted clads are '67 and '68s. At one point I rarely found 1969 clads and thought they may have never made it out of Mint vaults, but recently I've gotten much more of them.

There are rumors (See April ed. of Coinage) that coining of new halves by the Mint may be halted in the near future. Hate to see that happen, but the fact that they are rarely circulated these days makes that a distinct possibility. I know I'm doing my share to "distribute" them--Everywhere I go local shops get a few from me for small purchases image

Welcome aboard, Fullyclad. I, for one, am Fullyhappy to see you.

The fed recovered a lot of silver from circulation in 1968 and '69. I believe
it was almost entirely 90% and don't know what, if any, they got of the 40%
when it's value went over face.

  • Not really. I have the system fine-tuned and can roar thru a $500 box in about an hour or so, while just watching the evening news like some folks do shucking corn or peas. Great stress reliever image I also record the number of silver coins, proofs, or errors, and their dates found each box, so I can check my trends and see if it's time to change banks or not. Then I turn around the next day and take them in to deposit. Turning in such numbers of coins can be time-consuming. I'm not here to try to convince others to follow this strategy--- It obviously won't work for everyone and in every part of the country. I've read where some of y'all can't even get wrappers for halves, and I also aware that most banks charge for returning loose coin in deposits...image

Thanks for the welcome, Clad King. Enjoyed reading your posts for awhile...

There were large numbers of 40% clads melted in '79-'80. I've seen
estimates of up to 80%, but suspect it was more on the order of 30%
of mintage. I actually got to see what types of things were being melt-
ed in those days and when there was 40% silver it was very often BU
rolls which collectors and hoarders were cashing in. Perhaps large amounts
were melted and perhaps they were disproportionately uncs, but I've never
heard of the fed melting such coin. It's not impossible, but remember it was
late '78 or '79 before the value of the 40% halfs exceeeded face. By this
time there were very few of these in circulation. Even clad halfs would have
been kept in low numbers at the individual fed banks. It doesn't seem likely
that they would bother to separate these for the small numbers they would
find, and so far as I know, it has never been reported.
