Iowa Quarter - Fox TV - Green Acres

I just read fox is planning a sitcom based on the old Green Acres show. Then I saw they have hired the state of Iowa to promote it on their quarterimage

I just looked at the other designs. They'd be laughed out of the union for the pig & cow design! I'd really like to see The Sullivans make it. Not many people outside the military know about them. link

Of that group of designs I agree that the Sullivans would make the best tribute.

I like The Sullivans design very much. I think that would be great.

The Sullivans were 5 brothers who served on the same ship, and were all lost when their ship sank in the battle of the Solomon Islands. A Fletcher class destroyer commisioned in 1943 was named in honor of them. It was decommissioned in 1965. A new ship (I forget the class) was recently named after them as well.

ttt - This thread has too much potential for lively comments on the pig & cow, farmer joe, etc for it to be off page 1 already!

  • Sorry, Brian. It's just that the Sullivans reverse is actually darn good.
The surprize of that, and then the links to the history of the Sullivans kind of took me out of sarcasm and ridicule mode. Not that the pig and cow design shouldn't be held up for limitless abuse, but I have to get in the mood.

There is a postage stamp commemorating the Sullivans.

Do you think that should keep them from being on the quarter? Or are you mentioning it as a point of information?

  • you know, when I looked at the first design with the outline of the state and the little farmhouse with the curved road, from a distance at first glance that looked like a pig with a big ol grin on it's face. I think they should incorporate Porky Pig in there somewhere.

It is my understanding the we here in Iowa are actually going to have TWO (count em 2) state quarters. The first will be a resident quarter and bear the simple inscription on the reverse "Iowa isn't the end of the world but you can see it from here". The second will be for nonresidents and bear the simple inscription "Iowa isn't the end of the world but you can see it from there". The mint error folks will go absolutely bonkers over the missing T.

  • Well they are keeping up the fine tradition of poor designs but if those are the ones we have to chose from than I'd have to go for the Sullivans design as well. I wonder what the mint will do with it.

I am partial to the Sullivan Bros. design. I was just reading where California's design is not allowed to depicted the bust of an person, living or dead. I take it all states do not have this limitation in regards to their quarter design? I also like the schoolhouse design.

  • I agree with conder....if anyof the designs, the Sullivan Brothers is the best......but I think a better design based on them would be more appropriate....IMHO
