AU or Mint State -- I take this to a vote of the people.

Please take a look at this ANACS MS62 bust dime, which PCGS views as AU58.

It's a pretty accurate image -- please give me your view.

(Oreville -- I've got the obverse back on, but am having trouble getting rid of those null images. Sorry about the clutter!)

  • The only thing that makes me wonder about this coin from the picture are the tops of the eagle's wings and the change in colloration in the word STATES. I would have to take a good close look at those areas, otherwise it looks like a nice coin.

Blast this PC! I can't see Heritage's photos on it. I guess I'll have to wait until I get to the office and fire up the laptop.

You need a expert on those with a loop.
No way to tell from a picture in my opinion.

Since you said pcgs say's it is au58 I guess you cracked it out and sent it?
You live dangerous. I would have sent it cross at ms60 or higher.

Very nice coin. It is tough to see if there is any rub from a photo. You really need to be able to view it from different angles under a light.
    I like it though. Mark

Perhaps net graded by PCGS due to old cleaning. K

I can't find any wear from the scan

I agree with the rest, impossible to tell from the scans.

On my monitor I see a couple of small spots that may be rubs or it just may be the angle and/or lighting. A very nice coin regardless.

I can't detect any wear in the scan, but rubs sometimes can't be seen in scans. That said, the coin is PQ enough that I'd love to own it regardless of what the holder said. I had a 1928 Peace dollar AU'd that I still swear is MS64 (and I've looked with a loupe in different lighting). The holder grade is just an opinion, ya know.

I'm with DHeath, it's a wonderful coin regardless and I'd enjoy owning it. My decision on price would be based on what other coins in the grade range look like regardless whether it says MS or AU on the label.

I would vote for mint state but it was probably dipped a tad too much reducing the luster. Perhaps PCGS net graded it for that reason. Still a very nice coin.

Looking at the scans, I’d say this piece has full Mint State sharpness, but it has been dipped so much that its luster is shot. Still it’s very well struck for type, and I can see why many of you like it.

I guess I could see your coin going either way. Here's a picture of a similar looking 1835 bust dime I just had graded AU58 by PCGS. mike

Higashiyama: I cannot get the obverse links to work. Could you check them?

Looking at the reverse, I woud agree with Bill Jones.

The reverse luster looks very washed out.

Going for nice strike details on a coin at the expense of luster is a dangerous game.

  • Why would you send it to PCGS? It's in a ANACS 62 holder. That's as good or better than PCGS anyday. Everyone has stated here over and over that PCGS is lowballing all submissions. You were asking for it and ...bam

Please don't tell me the "registry" made you do it.

you got screwed, but not by either plastic service. you fell into the trap of thinking either of their opinions really matters. fact is that in bust coinage, a sweet au-58 will frequently sell for more than an ugly '61 or '62. bust that puppy out, and if you like it, be happy that you got yourself a heckuva nice coin. if you don't like it, you should have got your $ back when you bought it!

  • ANACs couldnt tell if my 1909 S Indianhead was real or fake! It came out of their holder and they called it counterfiet, I guess you know what I think of them so far. Worth more in the PCGS holder if you ask me!

Coyn --- actually, the real purpose of my submission was to cross a VG 10 Missouri commen from an ANACS slab to PCGS. This coin crossed, and will be added to my registry set of commems! This set is the centerpiece of my collection -- please admire. I threw the dime into the submission as an afterthought, mainly out of curiosity. If the coin had crossed, however, I would have added it to "one thin dime" -- my other registry set!

PCGS does this all the time with toned coins, the only difference is that it is in their holder both times. Guess they have no clue what they are doing either.

AU58 vs. MS62/63 is almost always a question.
