2001-W 1/10oz PCGS MS69DCAM Hmmmmm!!!!

imageimage

I posted yesterday about a coin I was bidding on. The thread was lost somehow due to my membership being updated.

Anyhow a gentalman replied to my delema about the infamous 2001-W 1/10 oz PCGS MS69DCAM. I wanted to thank you. I believe you were correct in the possibility of PCGS making the error. However, I still do not know for sure. I asked the seller three times now for the PCGS register #'s and three times got a lot of fluff. The picture is real blury on the auction page and claims he can't provide a better picture either. Hmmmm.........

I am not sure how to install a hyperlink, but I'm sure you can paste this one.

The label on the holder in the picture is marked PR.
At least that's what I see.
  • I thought it looked like PR as well. I called the seller on it and he swears it is an MS69!

Why won't he tell you the cert numbers on it?
Maybe someone with a pop report can look and see if there are any MS dcams listed.
  • Here's that coin blown up to 800 x 600....it looks like PR69DCAM.....

  • I put the picture into a photo program and zoomed in and sure enough it is an MS

I cant make out the cert. # and I don't know why he wont give them to me.

I posted a reply to your original thread. I honestly can't tell from MartyF's link what's on the label. It's definitely a proof. If it says "MS" it's a label error. image

OK, so what does the nuymbers look like to you, let's see if we can figure this out.

    I'm thinking something like this:

    704334_ _

There might be a 1 between the 4 and the 33

What can you get? Try to match/bounce your numbers off mine and see if we can get it.

I don't know, I look at the grade an see PR69DCAM.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • There is no such thing as a dcam ms is there? on this screen it clearly says pr69dcam

Also, doesn't the "W" designation make it a proof??
  • the pop report shows the w to be a proof coin. there are 351 graded pr69 dcam for 2001w $5.00 the ms shows no cameo grading.

On the second scan I see "PR" also. The proofs carry the P mint mark from 1988 to 1993, and the W mint mark from 1994 to present, although in 1999 there are uncirculated examples with a W, struck accidentally from unpolished proof dies. They're listed in the red book at $450.00. image

I say accidentally, but who knows, with the weird stuff that's been coming from the mint lately. It may have been deliberate. image
  • Thanks for everbodys input. Either my three emails asking for the cert#'s or someone tipped him off. He pulled the auction. I have emailed a couple of times to find out what happened and did not get a response.

I was hoping he was an honest person and that there was a chance that I was on to something unique. I read all of his emails again and he pretty much implicates himself as a fraud. He has a lot on ebay with buy it nows. No one is bidding on anything he has up now.

    Just another scammer!

    Thanks everybody!
