FINEST known MONSTER toned MS68 halfdime

this coin currently resides in an ngc ms68 holder and was graded and slabbed in august 1994 this is the REAL DEAL a real 68!!

i hesitate to call any pre civil war coin in a 68 holder high end or undergraded BUT THIS COIN IS A NO BRAINER LOCK EXTREMELY NICE 68 COIN. the photo doesnot do justice to this coin

this coin is totally different and extremely nicer in person TO REALLY apprecaite THIS COIN IT NEEDS TO BE "sight seen"

one dealer that saw this coin and put together the finest known MS set of pcgs seated liberty legend obverse halfdimes including all the pcgs ms68 coins told me that this ngc coin was better than all the 4 known at the time ms68 pcgs coins which were all white

this ngc coin had more eye appeal and overall was nicer! also i happen to agree.......lol

this coin is prooflike and has a target bullseye toned obverse and reverse with the reverse more toned to the middle of the coin buth sides have booming lustre underneath the toning with theprooflike surfaces making a more visual impact with this coin even though it is a small coin it stands out and hits you when you see it in person. it is also fully struck

the bright NEON colors OF RED ORANGE GREEN AND PURPLE GRADUATE TO THE CENTERS OF BOTH SIDES WITH THE REVERSE BEING SLIGHTLY DEEPER COLORS and mixing slightly in the center of the coin. all the neon colors are really not seen on this coin from the photo!

also this coin is blown up when originally photographed like 15x in size and if you examined this very tiny coin in person with a 5x glass you would see no imperfections!

the prooflike surfaces are from an extensively polished die common in halfdimes of this era and this coin was so small and super thin that die clashing was like the norm for these coins and the die polish is to polish die clash marks from this coin and on the reverse (not visible on this photo) you can still see the tinest trace of a clash at 9 pm just inside the wreath. many who would examine this coin would miss this as it is ever so slight.

the photo of this coin doesnot capture the eye appeal or the blast of this coin AT ALL. in person you could light a fire with this coin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the look of this coin makes it clear to anyone who sees it that this is a fully original undipped unplayed with coin. but this COIN AGAIN NEEDS TO BE SIGHT SEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have seen ONE other ngc ms68 halfdime and IT WAS in no way, shape or form anywhere near the eye appeal or quality OF THIS COIN

THIS IS A GREAT COIN WILD! WILD! WILD!

i have examined this coin in person and the above are my thoughts as such this coin resides in an eastern collection

MANY THANKS TO BRIAN ITSNOTJUSTME! WHO REFORMATTED THIS COIN TO FIT ON HERE!!!!!!!!

sincerely michael

Michael, with all sincerity, you have the finest coins on the Boards.

I sometimes don't like looking at all the scans posted here but yours are an utter joy. Keep it up!!

Michael: I do see the die striations which is evidence of a very early die state coin. PCGS does not always seem to like die striations (die polishing lines).

    It is a grgeous coin.

What is that double mark between Liberty's arm and the UNITED STATES? Looks like it is on the plastic?

hi there oreville well to me grading is an art not a science and pcgs is certianly entitled to their opinions

but since these coins always come with a huge amount of die polish this is taken into consideration atpcgs/ngc when these coins are graded,

for example just like in early copper pre 1807 you can get away with edge bumps and uneven planchets whereas if this was on a lincoln cent it would preclude being slabbed!

the coin was extensively polished to remove clash marks and maybe it is an early die state? i didnot think so, but i guess anything is possible

the two marks you see were in the die in my opinion when the coin was struck and the photo brings them out more than when viewed in person and with the prooflike surfaces acts like a magnifyer just like with morgan dmpl dollars in person with this coin being so small they are not noticeable the photo for some reason excentuates them

This kind of a coin is the best argument against numeric grading. Numeric grading does the coin injustice whether MS-68 64 or 69. Descriptive adjectives are desireable.
But Michael, you have spoiled me so especially with that other gorgeously toned half dime that I am screaming.......more! and more!
I read that these coins are in a collection (Eastern collection) that is not yours?
Will any of these coins be for sale in the next 5 years?

THANKS TAD SUPERCOIN! you are a very astute dealer/collector and i respect your comments!

hi there oreville!!!!!!!!!! well for me this coin overall with everything taento consideration is a no brainer 68 coin ngc/pcgs any day of the week and this coin NEEDS TO BE SEEN IN PERSON SIGHT SEEN! to really unbderstand it and appreciate it!! the scan it not good or i sohlud say it is the best that is currently available for the technology we have currently!

it would be a 69 if not for the mark on the left side of miss liberty

well all i can say is that the coins are in an eastern collection and i am sure you know the rest of the story! i think the owner of these coins does not know if they will be offered within the next 5 years
    possibly so
but right now they are not being considered as such

i was teasing you about the 37 set BUT THE PRICE WAS FIRM AND REASONABLE FOR what they are..........................lol LOL

    Michael,

A truly wonderful coin. Those are the kinds of coins I would like to be putting away for myself. The trouble is finding them however. The scan shows a tiny curved line extending up from the top of the "A" on the reverse.
What is that from? Maybe those 2 lines in the left obverse field are clash marks from the wreath? All the other MS68 half dimes I've seen have been white also...with the exception of the 1839 in Benson that NGC regraded 68 following PCGS's 66 grade.

hi there roadrunner........ you are very astute!!!!!!!

and you are rightabout the curved line on the reverse!!!

aboue the *A* it is a clash mark from miss libertys skirt/drapery!

also i think you are right about the obverse i will have to look again as i have not examimed this coin in quite awhile!

after i see/examine a coin i rarely ever................. look at it again.....lol i am serious! unless there is a specific need....

thanks for your comments and for the HELPFUL OBSERVATIONS! when you mentioned that i remember from a few years back asking that question myself and then looking at the coin and verifying it!! i really never forget and you jogged my memory...... with all the photos i just am going by my notes what i remember and the photos!

this coin really needs to be sight seen! in terms of flash and prooflike qualities and lustre it looks like a superb gem fully prooflike 1881-s morgan but with the color!

for me seated coins the legend obverse halfdimes are very interesting and vastly underrated coins also a brand new die was used for these coins starting in 1860

well really with the transitional coinage of 1859/60 and this along with so called processes for faster/more efficient/improved method of striking caused the pressmen to space the dies closer together

    and combined with the tiny

i mean super tiny and super thin planchets of the little half sisters caused constant die clashing and this resulted in a huge amount of die polishing of the dies to erase the clash marks hence prooflike surfaces!!

this is how they come and even some/most other dates are like this!

to me if i put in a defination of a halfdime in a dictionary i would put

clash marks, heavy die polishing and prooflike.......lol

trime of all the toned coins i have ever seen this halfdime is the finest overall i have ever seen!

this coin photo is like looking at the photo of the grand canyon!!

then you go to the grand canyon on a clear sunny cloudless day and you see it in person

well the photo is very good but nothing like being there in person this is how this coin is

to me currently in terms of grade and really eye appeal this is overall in my opinion the finest current graded mintstate ngc/pcgs legend obverse halfdime in existance

now tomorrow is another day AND maybe this coin will take second place someday!!!!!!!!!..................BUT NOT TODAY...........LOL

this coin will one day be in a 69 holder also

A true work of art. How can anyone who likes only white dipped coins look themselves in the morror and say this isn't a gorgeous coin. This is what collecting true gems is all about.
